I am having no luck with these mirrors. I am on my third one and this one is turning into a problem also. First off I bought this one with part of the door still on it. The foot and the mirror cup are in excellent shape though so I bought it.. After I was able to get it off of the door (took a week and I sliced my hand pretty good), I was able to take out the two screws and pull out the glass and cables part way through so I could remove the wasp nest that was in there ( it filled the entire cup ). Now that the mirror is cleaned up I am moving on to the broken off adjustment knob. Does anyone know how these come out for replacement? I see that they are sold in the Mustang catalogs so they must be replaceable. Do they unscrew or are they pressed in? I have another mirror with bad glass and a pitted bucket but the knob seems ok. Before I have to buy ANOTHER one can anyone help me with this one? The other thing with this mirror is the cables don't seem to be moving the glass. I thought it was the wasp nest preventing the glass from moving but I can now move the stub of the knob and the glass doesn't wiggle. The cables all seem to be in good shape, any thoughts on this also. HELPPPPPPPPPPPPP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks ... Bob
Almost positive they are pressed in. I don't have one that isn't broken (anymore) either. I didn't know they sold replacements though, so that's good news. I was gonna improvise.
I have repaired a few broken control knobs and have always had to drill them out. After you have the old knob out you can run a bottom tap in the hole and thread the new one in. I have just drilled hole out and used jb weld to hold them in also. As far as the cables go I have just hung the mirror and let cable hang down and sprayed wd 40 on it and let it soak in.
Does anyone have any specific pointers on removing the adjuster knob in this mirror? The knob is spring loaded and I don't want to damage anything trying to yank it out. I have to take out the broken knob from the good mirror and a good knob from a broken mirror. Not sure a vise is the answer on white cast metal parts.
I just done this myself, they are not spring loaded or anything like that, the knob is just a simple screw in threaded knob/bolt, so if it´s broken just drill it out and/or use "ez out" (I think that is what you call it over at your part of the world) ... Good luck!!!!! Robert.
Robert, Thanks for the reply. Mybe you could stop over this weekend and give me a hand taking out the knob (LOL). Bob
So did you get it drilled out and fixed? I have to start one of these repairs too. Was wondering if you made any progress .............
Eric, Hi! Heres the scoop. I noticed that the broken off stub could be turned so I was thinking that it might be threaded in. The replacement repop Mustang knobs are threaded so I thought it would be the same. I uses a very small set of visegrips and got a good grip on it. I then discovered that after turning it several times it wasn't coming out of the hole at all. I turned it back the other way several times and it did not get any tighter. I then just gave it a tug an it pulled right out. I think by me spinning it back and forth that it loosen it up in the hole enough that it pulled out easier. I havent had a chance to do anything else with it. I turned it over to the body shop so it can get painted along with the car. I figure that I'll wait for the car to come home, mount it on the door and then figure out how to mount a new knob. The hole seems pretty straight so i was thinking of getting the replacement mustang one and maybe making something to thread on the end that would just push in the hole. Any way thats the scoop so far. LMk how you make out with yours ... Bob
can i join in here with a question of my own? on my mirror, the adjustment knob is completey removed. what i have is three loose cables hangig on the inside of the door. does anyone know wether i can get a complete replacement for the remote (saw one on ebay) and if i'll be able to get the whole thing working again?
There just cables crimped into a holder. So would think it can be done but I've never done it. Probably the hardest part is keeping tension equal on all 3 cables while crimping them in place. I just drilled mine out today. Was going to try and reuse my old knob but it is a little crusty in the chrome so I'm going to pick up the reproduction knob from Mustangs Unlimited. Here is a picture of the drilled out mount - also, notice the cables are color coded yellow, green, red
My new knob came today from Mustangs Unlimited. I went to see how it fit, and I must have really lucked out and grabbed a perfect size drill bit when I made the hole. The new knob screwed right in and tapped its own threads into the control. Like a self tapping screw. It seated very tightly into the hole I made, so no JB weld will be needed. Even torqed it down with a padded needle nose pliers. Just like new again! Size drill I used for the hole was a #28 - 9/64 ---
Eric, Thanks for a finish to the story! I was going to order mine from them also. I believe they also sell the chrome finishing nut to bolt it to the door. Mine is a little scratched up. I will be checking the hole on my mirror this weekend if I can get to it at the body shop. They started to get things painted today finally!
Old thread, but thanks for posting this ... fighting with mine right now. The finishing nut on the inside of the door looks a lot like what went into a 1970 Mustang, and those are available repopped. I have been hoarding some of these for years and likely have decent ones if someone needs one.
Yes, old but still very useful thread .............. ............... I'm glad I never deleted the old pictures from my attachment list. You are right, the Late '69/'70 Mustang is the same and repopped. Here is a pic from Mustangs Unlimited.
Got it drilled out ... of course, it wasn't easy. What ever is? First tried Bob's "grab it and yank hard" method after loosening it up a bit. Only succeeded in snapping the stub off smaller. Center-punched it and used a 3/32" bit first and drilled through the whole stub. Tried yanking the weakened stub out, but only mangled it. That is when I got out the 9/64" bit and went at it. I was having a hard time holding the inner works steady with various pliers. Finally, I put a 1/4" socket into locking pliers and could hold the works down with a lot of pressure, while drilling through the middle of the socket. Worked like a charm. Looks like I have to order a new mirror control knob ....
