The nuts on my exhaust manifold bolts keep backing off after a few minutes running. So I picked up some "Permatex red" today from the parts store and followed the instructions, to no avail! They had no Lock-Tite and I was told this would be just as good. What should I do to keep these nuts from loosening?

did you try grade 8 lock washers?
perhaps some water to promote some fast carosion.
the heat will melt the lock tite.
also the heat expansion will loosen the nuts. you need to go back and retighten the nuts after a few heat cycles.

By the way, I got the High temp stuff, do you think it would still melt?

you should be able to find them at the auto parts stores. napa and pepboys have good asortments of hardware. the exhast gets up over 1000 degrees. now i dont know if the studs get that hot but ive seen manifolds glow cherry red. ive also loosened locktite with a torch, i doubt the hight temp works with the heat level that the the mainfolds reach.

see if you can find lock nuts that are called "stoger nuts" These are a lock nut that does not have the plastic insert like ny-locks do. My spelling description may be wrong, but they are out there. Specialty shops will carry them, or even a well stocked napa or pepboys If all else fails then double nut them. With engine cold, tighten the nuts up as tight as you can. then put a second nut on each stud and tighten it up to the first nut. this usually works:)

Are we talking about the stock 5/8" nuts loosening up? If so I would think a regular everyday lock-washer would be enough to stop it if tightened up enough. I have never seen such a problem lol I have always had just the opposite problem of not bein able to loosen the nuts without breaking the studs. lol

Took the words right out of my mouth. Lock nuts but not the plastic ones.

I think it's more like a jam-wish sandwich. You have 2 slices of nut and you wish you had some jam.
