I'm not a big fan of Flow Masters. They are too loud and the resonance is nerve racking. I rather listen to a coffee can on an import. Call me old school but I like the sound of unbalanced pipes going through cheap turbos. I know the H pipe and Y pipe will give you a horsepower or 2 but the sound is different in a balanced exhaust.

Someone's signature on this forum says "if its too loud, you're too old". That's me. I especially don't like the tinny sound on idle. Prefer a low rumble. So, rthomas771, what mufflers do you like? You just convinced me to forget the H pipe when I do my exhaust.

im am geting to old. i feel my car is too loud for the steet. i started with the 50s series dumping. that was too loud so i had tail pipes put on and i would say its just as loud with them. in talking with the guy who did the pipes, he feels that no perfomace muffler will get it quiter than it is already. so ill just have to keep the stereo loud.

It's really not being to loud...its the tinny/raspy sound. Loud mufflers save lives. I have cheap Thrust Turbo's on my Falcon. At 2500-3000 rpm I can hear myself think and talk to the passenger without using sign language. I'll try and get a sound clip posted.

the exhast will sound different on different combinations. the bigest factors are wheater you have manifolds or headers, size of the pipes, cam and compression.
the headers will be louder than manifolds
the biger the pipes the louder it will be
the cam will be what gives it a lope.
higher compression creates more noise in my experience.

I ran 2.25" Dynomax super turbo 2's on my old 4dr.Nice old school sound(mellow)but sounded really good at WOT.My Comets got stock manifolds,2" duals out the back w/generic muffler shop turbos/h-pipe.Sounds ok,but almost too mellow.Might hunt up some Flows later.

When you are standing still, you may get fumes in the car with the turn downs.
Thats why factory systems exit at the back of the car.

Two 1973 LDO Mavericks (one 4 Drag one 4 driving like Mad on the roads :) ) also have a 75 6cyl Stock! Ok, well sort of Stock :P
mavericks seal horrible anyways side exit, dumps, out the back it will still stink! lol! it helps to have it out the back but again it all gets back in the car somehow.

every combo is differant as someone just said above

but general rule. any chambered muffer is going to sound loud period!

anything with a x pipe will quite the car down a bit and give it a much differant sound.

i have flowmaster 50s on one car.

    here: http://maverickman.com/movieMaverickrun.mpg

another one you can hear it better here. yeah i know i slept at the light!

if you can't see it try this:

    http://vids[DOT]myspace[DOT]com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=8625985

    replace [DOT] with .

    9:1 motor with hooker headers, 2-1/2 to a 3 inch x-pipe with 3 inch after to 3inch 50's

not the best weld job but it does the job.

i had magnaflows on my other car they are great mufflers but thats what they are muffers. they are very quite. i also have magnaflows on my 06gto which is my daliy driver i love them becuase they are quite and there is not drone! however for someone that wants to get noticed for the sound i wouldn't go with them ie: my neighbor said it was too quite. lol! the car now has chambered old terminators on it now from back in the 90's with they were closing up super shops! lol! 10xs louder now! now my other neighbor hates me!

here is the set up. sorry way old photos (and yes the bottom of my car is filthy and it still is!) anyways headman headers (crappy headers! sorry headman!) 2-1/2 pipes to a 2/1-2 magnaflow x-pipe to 3 inch over the axle out the rear sides of the rear tires.

If you like it quieter, but still sounding aggressive, I would recommend glasspacks or Cherry Bombs. They give a deeper, slightly muffled sound, but still get a bit loud when you nail it.

Had those on before the Flowmasters and liked them more than the flows, but I kept reading that the Flows would free up a little bit of power.

We did our system yesterday we went with 14x4 magnaflows offsets with a H pipe balancer and turn downs before the rearend. Sounds excellent very low throaty rumble but lets you know she's alive when you nail it. Its hard not to just go out and start her to hear it run.
