I used to wash and sometimes was cars for money when I was a kid to make some money. Pam next door was a good costomer of mine as she hated cleaning cars. In 1972. I was 15 years old and Pam traded her '67Mustang for a new '72Maverick Grabber. Grabber green/black interior! I just loved the car! Even my parents liked it and they were big car people. I washed/waxed it for alot. In '73, I got my license and Pam let me drive it to coin car wash. This was a huge joy for as I pretended it was mine! Shortly after this, Pam moved on her own. I don't even know what happened to her or the car but, I knew My first new car would be a '74 Maverick Grabber! This is how I became a Maverick person! Joe
I became a Maverick person when I finally got sick and tired of all the mechanical work my worn out 68' Mustang needed. It was my daily driver and had been good to me, but it was nearing 300,000 miles and the poor old car was nickle and dimeing me to death. I needed a newer car fast. The assistant manager were I worked had bought a 1977 Maverick a few months back from the original owners, and as much as he liked it, he really wanted a Mustang to play with. One Saturday he was looking through the classifieds insearch for an inexpensive Mustang. Without thinking, I offered to trade him even up my Mustang for his Maverick. I could see the wheels turning in his head over that idea. By the following Monday I got my answer. We exchanged keys and titles and I offically became a Maverick owner. This was the first car I ever owned that was not a Mustang, but I ever regreted making that trade. The Mustang is long gone now, but the Maverick lives on.
Being a driving teenager when Dyno Don and Bob Glidden started making noise in NHRA with their Mavericks set the hook in my mouth (for you sophisiticated types, that phrase means caught me).
My wife made me do it.....I was a Mustang guy for a long time. I asked my wife if she would like me to build a car for her and suggested a mustang or cougar....she said "nope, to big, I want something smaller." She spotted a Maverick one day and said, "Thats the car I want!" I said, "A MAVERICK!!" "Yep" she said and the rest is history. I love the Mavericks now, I was un-informed about them before. Once I started looking into them and what they could look like I was hooked. All the ones I had ever seen before were rusted out grocery getters with the rear bumper dragging the road. I guess my wife is good for something!! (Just kidding, honey....) We looked for a couple of years for the right car and finally found it on this site. It was listed for $300 in the classifieds. I still cant believe that some of you guys didnt grab it fast!! Of course I take all the credit now and its my car (Please dont tell her that).
When I was growing up in Tucumcari NM, a couple hours outside of Albuquerque, our neighbors had a Stallion Mav and I thought it was the greatest car ever. The older woman used to drive it only on the weekends and the rest of the time it was in their garage and covered. Well needless to say when we moved to California I forgot about it. When I got into a car accident almost 4 years ago my little 82 Cressida (in mint condition I must say) was totalled and I got $2300 for the car and about $5000 for my injuries. As I began looking for a replacement car I found a Maverick for sale in Van Nuys, CA for only $1200 and after seeing it I knew it had to be mine. It was a good deal and I have learned a lot. I'll never sell this car.
Well My mom got one from her dad ages ago. It was the family car for awhile. The car has many memories and never left us stranding far from home. If it broke down and couldnt move we wasnt far from home. Alot of the times we was able to get it to last long enough to get home or it never left the house. It became my first car but now it sits at my parents house. It became to much to try and keep it running. I do however have big plans for it soon. I plan on doing a full restore on it. Also another reason is its the only car that come in 4-door that I like.
well i was inmy 00 lancer evo 5 and i was going down the road and i saw a muscel car and i know that i had a good car well i pulled up next to it at a redlight and saw it was a maverick well we raced and i lost well a couple of months latter found out he was saleing it so i bought it now i have 3 cars all at the age of 18.. its pointless
When the first Mavericks came out the speed rags were quick to stuff 302 Boss' in them. This giant killer of a sleeper caught my imagination and became the car of my dreams (because I could realistically have afforded one, had I been more ambitious). I was 20 yrs. old then. Fast forward to Christmas eve, 2000; my brother-in-law the used car salesman calls me and says "You'll never guess what someone just traded in. A '73 Maverick 2 dr. with practically no rust on it! I'll drive it to your house for $100." I could see the potential for me to finally be able to afford a street machine project, and so took him up on the offer. I had the wreckers come for the six cylinder engine within a week. Still workin' on it, and loving every minute of it (especially the daydreams of a finished project, and sleuthing for those hard to find parts). John B.
My brother's Sprint was the first car I ever drove down the quarter-mile drag strip. It was also the first back seat me and my date cramped into - to you know, hold hands 'n stuff. When I came across my Maverick a few years ago (that was partially set up for drag racing), I had to have it. It's been nothing but money, blood, sweat, money, and tears ever since. Did I mention money? I don't know when it'll be, but I can't wait to run it down the track.
In the early 70's most of the pro stock fords were mavericks and comets, I've liked them since, in 92 my daughter wanted an early mustang for her 16th birthday, I found a 72 grabber v8,air p.s.auto with new tires exhaust, and carpet in the local paper. My daughter was not to excited until she seen it, she already had named it before I bought it, In 95 she left for college in a new ford ranger and I inherited it back.
Somewhere around the 11th grade My parents aquired a 71 Pinto from a family friend. My dad and I rebuilt the engine and this was the car I was to drive throuought high school. Neeless to say in the 80's the pinto was the most uncool car to be seen in, let alone own. My mom owned a 71 Maverick 2 door 6 cyl. My plan was to get the car by getting her to drive the pinto, kind of a "trade ya for a couple of days" thing. Well before long, I was driving it more and more and she saw a 74 she liked better, so she bought it. I kept the 71, and we sold the Pinto. I had the car for 8 years and in that time, replaced the 6 with a 302, changed the car to 5 lug all the way around, and painted it. somewhere in 1990 it died, and I didnt have the money to fix it so I sold it. (stupid move on my part) Glen
well i was l was looking to buy my first car a year ago. I love the old american iron so i was looking through the old car buy and sell for a few weeks until a 71' maverick 2-door in there caught my eye. i thought it would be a good first car to have being reasonably small ( the other car i was looking at was a '69 leSabre!) and the six would be good for insurance reasons as i'm only 21. when i went to look at it in person, no way did the pictures do it justice. it was in great condition and i loved the fastback styling. drove her home the very day, and the rest as they say is history...
My dad was a diehard Ford guy and we almost always had one or two old fords (Falcons and Mustangs mostly) around. In 1970 when I was a sophomore in high school, I inherited my older sister's 64 Falcon (170 I6, 4 door). Four years later, I inherited her 68 Mustang coupe (302 4 bbl). Big difference. Around that same time period, a friend of mine had a 72 Comet GT (302 with a couple of grand worth of machine work and go fast goodies on it and a 4 speed top loader he and his older brother had swapped in) that I really liked the looks of. One day he and I squared off on the local "strip" just outside town and he smoked me bad. Ever since then, I've thought they were pretty damned cool. That and I could kinda see some of the same styling elements used in the 69/70 Mustang fastbacks and the early 70's Torinos, and I thought those were pretty cool as well. My friend still has that Comet GT and it is still one of the fastest cars I've ever ridden in !
When I was 12 my mother got a 76 4 door with no paint on the roof, the trunk lid or the hood about a month later I told her I had to have it when she was done with it. After 4 years of doing what we could to keep it running the head gasget blew so now that I`m 16 she said its you`rs
