i got my maverick right before i got my permit when i was 15, im only about to be 20 now but i have no plans of ever giving it up. i like seeing the looks on peoples faces when im driving by. and hearing all the stories from people who bought mavericks when they first came out.

I have always loved Mavericks and Comets as for back as 1978. It was my Mom's first car , a 1974 Mercury Comet 2 door. Boy did i love that car. I still remember sitting in the Comet as a kid and seeing the Comet badge on the dash...."COMET".... wow how cool. When i got older i traded a 1980 Pontiac Phoenix for a 4 door 1977 Maverick, i drove the crap outta that car and loved it all the way. It did get smashed up in 1992 (sadly) so i stripped it down for parts and in 1993 i bought my '76 Comet for $200 off a little old lady ( Mr. White). When i bought my Comet i was thrilled as it looked like my Mom's old Comet. My car is far from perfect but damn do i love it. It's been my Collage car, my daily driver (1993 to 1995) and the first car i ever brought to a classic car show, I LOVE THIS CAR AND WILL NEVER PART WITH IT,......... but you know what i like the best about my Comet and all Mavericks and Comets......... they are not Mustangs, Chevelles, Vettes, Camaros, Chargers etc, etc, etc. Don't get me wrong, i like these cars too but owning a Comet or a Maverick is just different........ I LIKE DIFFERENT....... nuff said.(y)

    Sometime in the mid-1990s ...

A friend that I had just met first saw my Comet, walked around it and said, "Wow ... neat car! ... what is it?". Being that he was in his early 20s and driving a Mitsubishi Eclipse, I gave him the benefit of the doubt that it was possible that he never really paid any attention to cars until he could drive, and told him a little bit about it.

The next day, we were both on an errand and he was following me in his car. I lined up at a light next to a late-80s Monte Carlo SS. The guy was giving me the stink-eye and when the light went green, we went for it. The stink-eye turned to horror as I was grabbing second gear and was a half car ahead and about to make some tracks. I could almost read on the guys face ..."I am getting beat by that POS ... and it is a green POS on top of that ...". On top of all this, the guys girlfriend was riding shotgun and did not look at all happy about any of this. :rofl2:

When we got to our destination, my buddy comes running up to my car, yelling breathlessly, "Holy @rap! ... you smoked that Monte Carlo SS ..."

"yup ... those are heavy, slow barges, aren't they? ..."

    I love sleepers .... :thumbs2:

What is kind of funny to me, is the running theme here is that we all drive Mavericks/Comets to be different. Well you know that sort of stigma that everyone older than us gives us about owning our "different" car? You know, the one where they ask, why are you putting all of that money into a Maverick? Well that is because back 30 years ago, everybody had one, the market was flooded with these different cars. Funny huh?
