Check out this story that was printed in the Toronto Star on Feb 14 , 2009 about a 1973 Maverick. Yes i know that it is not the most flattering story about our cars but at least it got some print. I sent the person that wrote the story a bunch of pictures of Mavericks and Comets that were at shows or cruises. I also told her about the Maverick and Comet clubs that are out there ( MCCI, NMCC, MCG, BRAZILIAN Maverick car clubs). We will see what happens, but at the very least she will know that Mavericks and Comets DO have a following.
Good story. I remember how it was when I was in high school, much like the story. There were only a few of us who had cars. I had a 67 Mustang, there was a 68 Chevelle SS, a Pinto, a Vega, and another Mustang, a 66 rust bucket. We had all bought and paid for our own cars, working part or full time after school. Of course there were a couple of the "gimme" cars bought by the parents....a new Cutlass, a VW Karman Ghia, a Ford pickup or two. Sometimes I wish I could go back to those days....
Her story sounds pretty accurate to me. They werent cool cars back then. Most were along the lines of her description with awfull 70's era colors or even better the plaid with awful colors. Dont forget the Mustang wasnt very cool in the 70's either. Mustang 2. What a terrible decade for cars. We do make our Mavs and Comets cool now but we have better taste than those 70's designers.
I sent her an email also. Along with pictures of my Comet & the Mean Green Maverick.... Let her know about this website also....
Well now this could become very interesting, in my E-Mail to her i sent a bunch of pictures of our Mavericks and Comets and mentioned this website also. Now with you guys sending E-Mails who knows maybe our cars or clubs or whatever will get a write up which would be rather cool. She writes for the Wheels section every Saturday on page 2 in the upper left hand corner and yes i told her in my E-Mail that i do like her stories, who knows.
It take a very special person to have love for such an ugly car, no it's not a Camaro or a Mustang or a Vett its a $2,500 tin box on wheels that we can make stomp almost any of the high dollar cars that i mentioned.
Well how about this, the author of the story about the 1973 Maverick Lorraine Sommerfeld E-mailed me back and said she may try to make the meet and greet in Milton on Saturday if she is in town. I guess we will see but either way it was nice of her to respond to my E-mail, very cool.
Well, how about that. I got an answer to my email also. I sent her pictures of Mavericks/Comets too. Hi there, Coop. Who knew these cars could ever be this cool?? When Top Gun came out and the name Maverick was suddenly hot, I used to giggle remembering that car. The original paint colours were just so Brady Bunch - but they were the same as the avocado green/harvest gold appliances and bathroom fixtures. I think my Dad even had a leisure suit... Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Any more Maverick questions, I'll be sure to contact you. Take care, and thanks for writing. But, you must know by now. There is a huge following for the Mavericks/Comets. I've attached a picture of my 73 Mercury Comet. It is the sister to the Maverick. I have to say, it's fun being different. Everyone has a story about a Maverick/Comet, from there high school days. Everyone wishing they still had the car. How does the old saying go? Never judge a book, by it's cover.... Visit the MCCI (Maverick/Comet Club International) website: www.maverick.to . You'll change your tune, when you see the pictures, of some very nice Mavericks/Comets. I'm the Washington State Rep for the MCCI. I have 3 Mavericks & 4 Comets. I even have a couple of 4dr cars.... I even included your favorite color (green) Maverick. LOL Thanks, Coop
In the end this is all very cool and she seems very nice and "real" and that scores big time with me. Let's hope she makes the 4th NMCC meet and greet and maybe writes about it in the newspaper (Toronto Star). Hey we all could be stars.
