My tag reads wide ratio 390 Fairlane but it's a close ratio gear set with a Mustang tailhousing. I figure someone needed to replace the box when they rebuild it and used what they found.

I'm running a Comp Plus shifter too. I tried a Super shifter and it mounted too far to the left and made it tough for using a console. On the Comp Plus sfifters you can find them with different offset at the top of the shifter to move the handle further towards the center. Works much better with my console now.

Make sure to check the input shaft!
A 390 input looks like a 302 input at a glance. You have to measure the crank bushing surface to know for sure. They are not interchangeable. To run a 390 tranny on a 302 will ruin the tranny.

    The 289-390 used the same 1 1/16" input shaft. The 427-429 used 1 3/8"

    Jeff,
The bearing surface that goes into the back of the crank is different...
The 289-302 tranny is too long and won't stab into a 390 fully.
Then the 390 tranny is too short for a 302 and won't support the input shaft, destroying the foward main bearing in the tranny.

There are ways around it... but you have to know what you have to make mods.

Bought mine in '74, also paid 100 bucks ,AND...I lived in Clearwater/St.Pete area then...that is amazing!
We threw it in at my buddies gas station in Clearwater Beach one night and somehow the shift pattern was 2,1,4,3...drove it for 2 days like that, until we got a chance to fix it..Jack

The junkyard had taken mine out with a torch!
The only bolts that were undone on the whole thing were the bell bolts.
I got the tranny with the center of the crossmember still bolted to the rear mount. The original Boss Hurst shifter was still on it, like I mentioned, but they torched off the tee handle! Rather than unscrew it to get it out the bottom easier. The speedo cable was cut with dykes (or bolt cutters), and the first inch or so of the driveshaft was hanging on after being torched.

Can you just picture some yayhoos going around a Boss 302 with a torch removing parts?!? Even if it was wrecked, every nut and bolt on the car would receive tender loving care nowadays.

I bought mine from Pat's Speed Shop down in Park Hall, MD. It was an old NOS kit from the 60's which according to Pat, had much better parts than the stuff out now. His number is 301 863 2111.

My Toploader was in a 65 Mustang ... it came with the Hurst Comp Plus shifter already mounted ...

Mine had the competition plus shifter on it. But with the Liberty I'm running a V-gate.
