Ive got a 70' Maverick and its a 4 lug and need to change to a 5 lug what year and what vehicle will interchange to do this??
u could use a later model mav rear or some folks drop in 9 inch ford and some use ford 8.8's.any other than a later model mav will have a wider width, which may not be bad if you want to use newer style wheels without spacers.
Any other maverick year that has 5 lugs. I don't know of any other axles that are a straight bolt in length wise.
Any other comet or maverick 5 lug axle will technically work. One thing I didnt mention is that some people have said that the 5 lug axle housings use larger bearings which is possible. This is no big deal just buy new seals and new 4 lug bearings and have them pressed onto your 5 lug axles.
Does your 70 Maverick have an 8" rear end already? If not you'll have to change the entire rear end assy. Easy way to tell is does it have a removable inspection plate on the rear of the housing facing the rear of the car?
It is a fact that they use larger diameter bearings, and the axel itself is has a larger diameter where the bearing is pressed on. You would have to turn the 5 lug axle down to put the 4 lug bearing on. And then you still have the crappy 4 lug housing with the smaller drums. A complete 5 lug rear is the way to go.
4 lug and 5 lug 8" axles are different diameters so the bearing swap wont work unless you have the 5 lug axles turned down...(this will cut into the hardened surface of the axle making it weak)I thought 70 Mavs had the 7.5 salisbury diff???
5 lug axles are biger than 4 lug axles. also the offset for the brakes are different on the the 5 lug axle. you have to change the whole diff, or re drill the 4 lug axles and drums for 5 lug.
