What kind of upgrades can i do to get more horsepower. Lets say a $2000 budget. What would i want to start with. I am wanting a 2 carb set up that summit sales. But i hear thats to much for the motor so i want to make it run good for the motor. Also right now all i have is a stock 302. Gonna put headers on soon.
when you go to adding hp parts, make sure everything "matches" and works well together. headers, performer intake, 600 carb and performer cam would make it a really good street car with good driveabaility and torque. when looking up parts, watch the rpm range on the item and get your other parts to work with that. if you're going to run a stock torque converter, keep your range around 1500-5500 for a good street engine. after you get your engine parts, you'll want the right set of gears for the rearend so that you can really put those hp upgrades to the rear wheels. hope this helps
you can do a decent amout of up grades for $2000.00. the dual carb set up is more of a look than a performance thing. i would recomend geting a edelbrock performer rpm intake or wieand stealth intake, a holley 1850 (600 cfm) carb. a set of headers, and dual exhast. put a 2200-2500 rpm stall conveter in the transmission. a set of 1.7 roller rockers isnt a bad idea either. change the rear gears to some where around 3.25 to 3.55s depending on what type of driving the you mostly do. all this should make your car very fun to drive.
These are the things i alway's do first. Carb(4b) Good intake good air cleaner. Dist. upgrade coil spark plug wires Headers good flow threw mufflers gears and locker/spool First thing i always have done with a strret/strip car of fun DD.
this here is my plan for an engine http://www.musclemustangfastfords.c...plane_or_dual_plane_intake_upgrade/index.html i know it's an intake comparison but they are using a healthy 302.
The first thing I would do is get a leakdown test done on the cylinders. This will tell what type of a seal your rings have in the cylinders. If that measurement is good, then I get a set of heads, cam, manifold, carb and headers. If not, then I would get the shortblock rebuilt. Is your car a manual or auto? A good stall converter and decent set of street gears. Ken
I don't think you are going to do that on a $2000 budget. Not even if you do all the work you can possibly do. There are still things (IIRC) that you have to get a shop to do to the block in order for everything to have the proper clearance. For $2000 i would think you should be able to get 200 plus HP to the rear wheels. Where to start would depend on what you have now. Dual exhaust is pretty much a must. Nice Holley 4 barrel and a good intake. a decent cam. and maybe fit in a little head work or a decent set of used performance heads, and that my friend would pretty much chew up that $2000 bill that you are speaking of probably plus some
If i were you i would look for a low mile 87-92 5.0 shortblock since they have a pretty stout bottom end from the factory ($400 max). Pick up some used GT40 heads ($3-400 max). Swap out the springs to match your cam, then get the gaskets needed to assemble. You could find somebodys used roller cam and lifters for fairly cheap. You'll probably be in it $12-1500 for the long block. With 5-700 left over you can find carb intake and headers. Or headers and a small converter, then save up for your intake and carb. This would be a very reliable set-up. There are a ton of good used stuff you could use, people are always trying to go faster thus selling off their good old stuff for half of what you'd pay for new items.
In this order: 1.Headers/dual exhaust 2.Good electronic ignition set up 3.4 BBl carb/intake 4.Good street/strip cam.Stay around 220-230 duration at 050.No more. 5.2200 to 2500 stall converter 6.Good gears(3:55) and a posi And you will have a fun car to play with.
even just a good intake (weiand is best in my opinion) and a 4bbl carb and dual exhaust will make a noticable diffrence and you can get all that with a fraction of 2000 dollars and its good to start on your car when your young, but make sure you get all the info you need before you do anything major i found out that the hard way
ive built cars before where all the money was put into the motor. the car was a bit more fun than it was before, but when i put gears and a posi in and a higher stall conveter it, i found that the car is alot more fun. these idem get you the traction to put all the new power to the ground and really feel it. ive beat cars that have more power than ive had because i had beter gearing and traction.
