I know everyone's said it but I got into cars around 10 years ago and did my first rebuild for right around $1000-$1500. That was all engine so the rest could go towards rear gears or something else drivetrain. Here's what I did and my thoughts: Edelbrock 600cfm carb. (I still use this and I've done a significant rebuild since then.) K&N Air filter (I haven't tried the xtreme air tops but I hear good things) Edelbrock Performer intake (I would go with a Weiand Stealth instead, better intake for the same price) Edelbrock Performer Plus cam (I would go a little bigger here too, I was worried about my heads being compatible so I went conservative. Something in the 210/220 at .5 with max lift around .5 would be great) 2 1/2" exhaust all the way back w/ high-flow mufflers (Just added an X pipe) (This setup dyno-ed for 180hp 240ft/lbs and was a huge improvement over the stock 140hp and ? ft/lbs) Mallory Unilite distributor (This was a great investment, totally worth it. I later added an ignition box but this was a great start) MSD Blaster coil (Good long term investment) 8-9mm plug wires (great long term investment) Long tube headers (Hookers seem to fit best) All this would make an awesome package and easily put 200 at the wheels. Keep in mind whatever you do there will be a couple hundred in unexpected costs, like a double roller timing gear set, new gaskets, new thermostat, oil pan gasket, etc. Have fun!
5.0 "Roller block",HOLLEY 4-barrel carb. & intake, headers& dual exhaust and 3.55 gears. Check out that block My70Mav has for sale,$100 would be worth shipping if its a good block.Dont forget if you go with the 5.0 block you will have to get the 157 tooth 50oz. balance flexplate!
Kay everbody is saying rearend where can i get the best one at? Do any just bolt in without having to spend $100s at machine shops.
You don't need the best one for the power you will be pushing. All you need is a good 8" posi with 3.55's. A good 2000-2200 converter (tranny cooler is a must with a converter).
