"Motor would at LEAST need honing but maybe a 10 over bore. + gaskets and since your in it bearings throughout, crank turn, valve surfacing and springs."
machine works $200+ rebuild kit with bearings and gaskets $150 crank turn, rods and mains $150+ heads reworked, price depends on what all u want and what all they need. any machine work prices will vary from shop to shop. just call around for estimates
Just picked my motor up last week from machine shop. Cleaned block New freeze out plugs New cam bearings Honed the block Polished the crank $240.00 Ordered new cam, gasket kit, timing set $389.00
I dont know if machine shops are trying to make up for a slow economy but the machine shops in my area have gone crazy with prices. I called a few months ago and the prices are so high that it was a lot cheaper for me just to go out and buy all new parts than have a machine shop recondition anything. I try not to use machine shops for anything other than balancing my assemblys now. They wanted 250$ to recondition used rods, 225$ to turn my crank, 75$ to clean the block, 225 to hone it, 225 to deck it, and 225 to line bore.
Wow inflation I guess. Thought we were in a recession. Figure they would give you a deal to get the work. Guess they are so busy they can up the price. Makes a crate engine look a bit more interesting.
You guys are forgetting costs of pistons also. If you bore it you'll need that. YOu'd be better off buying a master rebuild kit from a parts store. THis way you get all gaskets and bearings. Also will come with pistons. You can get a kit with a crank also, but you have to give your old one to them. Might be worth it, or you could have your crank turned while you have the block bored. Im not sure what they charge around your area for boring, so that would all depend
Make sure that your machine shop's pricing is not contingent on you buying the rebuild kit from them.... i got burned by that once, rebuilding my pickup's 460. the machining wasn't bad, but he wanted twice what the same rebuild kit cost from Summit, or was going to double the price of the work.... and told me after the machining was done! It may not be common, but that's my experience (never going back there again).
For those machine shop prices just buy a block from DSS Racing Level 2 prepped block $495, Level 10 $625
This thread seems to me kind of like calling up someone in California and asking them what gas should cost down the street from my house in Georgia. Only way to know for sure is call around to your local machine shops and ask them. We could guess all day long.
Couple of years ago I was getting 5.0's .basically all machine work done plus all of the parts cleaning and having the piston hung on the rods for $750 with a master rebuild kit. I would bring it home and assembly and install it. That was flat tappet cams. Rollers were $650 if I re-used the cam. This was a 2 person shop out in the country but he was also a FORD NUT. He had several 427 blocks laing around and have 5 or so Tri-Power intake/carb set ups I always ran my hands all over. lol I always liked dealing with small shops that the owner was involved with the work. An older shop has older equipment but the buildings and stuff are paid for. clint
