I have a '74 maverick with stock automatic transmission. Problem is that it will not automatically upshift into second gear (at lower or higher RPM). The only way I can get it to upshift is to shift the shifter from "D" to "2." It will however correctly downshift when I place the shifter back to "D" or to "1." The kickdown lever was loose at the transmission end (looks like there was a washer that broke or something) but I got it tightened back up so there is no play sideways. Anyone have any ideas as to why it won't upshift?
There are three things that control the upshift on the C4. 1. vacuum modulator - make sure the hose is connected to the modulator ans that there is no oil in the hose. If there is oil in the hose replace the modulator. 2. Down-shift linkage - make sure it is free to move when the carb goes to wide open throttle. If it is stuck in the fully depressed position the transmission won't shift before about 40 mph into second and 75 in to high. 3. Governor - A stuck governor can cause the transmission to stay in gear - any gear that is selected. It will also prevent down-shift to first when you stop when in Drive. Check it out and let us know what you find.
Downshift linkage is good. It used to move at the throttle end but because it was loose at the transmission end, it would not engage the transmission at all. After putting a washer on the transmission end, it properly engages when the throttle is moved. It will actuate when the throttle is depressed, and at wide open throttle, it reaches a fully engaged position at the transmission end. Governor: Have not checked yet- but it may be worthy to note that I CAN manually upshift and when I do manually have it in second and put it over to "D" (Drive) it WILL properly downshift at the right time/RPM. Not sure if a governor will make the car NOT properly upshift but properly downshift... Vacuum- Have not checked- will check in the morning. Thanks for the response- EXACTLY what I was hoping for!
Just glad I had the time to get on tonight. I am usually too busy on the weekends to get on the computer.
