i had to get a different bracket set for the ALT to run the water pump then removed the steering pump and assy. the new water pulley is a little different diameter and barely clears the main pulley
If the pulley you put on the water pump is bigger, wouldnt it make the water pump turn less revolutions than it should? Wouldnt that lead to possible overheating?
it was easy for me I went from PS to MS and kept the same gear box and pitman arm. Only thing I did was add a power steering adaptor to my steering linkage. I got it from the Laurel Mountain vendor on ebay. NPD also sells one. It was about $70.00. The steering is fine and not too hard.
i have a high flow water pump that does well even at idle. actually my problem is the new bracket doesnt really tighten up the alt right so i cant get it snug enough to stop squeaking the belt gdemopesq what did you do about the pulley setup?
Right on sierra grabber. I understand what to do about getting rid of the steering part and using an adaptor. My biggest concern at this point is what to do about the belt to run the water pump. Thanks to all that have chimed in so far.
I took all the power steering stuff off. I had to buy a different pulley for the water pump so it lined up with the alternator and crank, then use the alternator as the tension adjuster, and run it all with one belt.
OK, that works. I will have to look around and see if I can find a different pulley to run. I wonder what vehicles are a straight swap?
Ok, I ended up getting a pulley at the junk yard off from a 67 Ford 3/4 with a 360 in it. Just finished up the project today and everything works as it should. It will take a bit of getting used to the armstrong steering system, but it does drive down the road a lot nicer. No more p/s slop. My car used to drift on its own, now it stays true.
after looking at my setup again and "joggin my memery" if you buy a alt bracket set for a non P/S car it will place the alt on line to use the other two pulleys for the P/S. i bought a chrome aftermarket one though because the P/S one is larger and will slow the water pump and fan down. i think the one i bought is too small hence my belt squeal. again if you get a chrome one for a 302 non P/S it should line up.
See, the way that I did mine with the one from a 360/390, it is a double pulley and allows me to run the pump/alt off from the larger pulley on the crankshaft. I am actually probably running the fan a bit faster than before. I have noticed that I get a bit more fan noise than I used to, but some of that could be due to not having a p/s setup blocking some of the fan noise, or it could be because I don't hear that freaking whining noise coming from the p/s pump. It is noticeably harder to steer at low speeds now though, but once up over 10mph it is hardly noticeable not having p/s.
Before you go manual, have you tried placing some 1/2" high spacers between the motor mounts and engine? I had the same problem with my 302 but fixed it without hood clearance issues using steel spacers I made and longer hardened bolts. You may want to also check your transmission dip tube, raising the engine may have a slight interfereance. If so, bend the bracket a little. Also, I learned if you loosen the trans mount nuts so when lifting the engine, it will align better. I also removed the mount bolts from the lower mounts and mounted the upper mounts with spacers to the engine then fastening them to the lower mounts when all said and done. Good luck.
Found a 84 grand marqui with a micro V belt set up and took the pulley from the water pump and the altenator and a micro v pulley off of a 351w with a single pulley and I had to push the flange on the water pump in a quarter of an inch but now everything lines up and is running off of one belt and actually is a pretty clean set up.
That would be a pretty nice setup. The only way I could see it being any better is with a serpentine style of setup, but that would be quite a modification.
i actually had to go to a one inch air cleaner already without lifting the motor. i have a performer RPM with no carb spacer and a grabber hood. i like the 390 pulley idea though, i may try that once since the junkyards have a lot of 360 near me.
