    Rear noise

Finally got my comet on the road and I had a clunking noise from the rear. I jacked the car up and checked the universal joints and they were ok. I then turned the rear and that is clearly where the problem is. When the rear wheel is turned it almost sounds like it is ratcheting and then it catches and turns the drive shaft. Help!

Thanks. Will it be obvious if I remove the cover and what is involved in changing out the gears?

Your rear axle shouldnt have a cover if its stock. It should be an 8 inch with a removable center section.Pull the drums...pull the 4 nuts holding the axle retainers in place(holds brake backing plates as well) Useing a small slide hammer...Pull the axle shafts. Then pull the third member(center section/chunk/pig) off the front of the axle housing(held on by a about a dozen nuts/copper washers). Then take it to a pro to have it rebuilt.

it could the the spider/side gears or you could have broken teeth off the ring gear. from your description i would bet its the ring gear. what ever it is you need to pull the third member out. this is a good opertuinty to upgrade the diff. you can get a limited slip, it would replace the spider/side gears. you can change the gear ratio for beter performance.

From the description, does this sound like it has a detroit locker? When I bought the car I was told that they used to race it and had replaced the rear with a 9". I know that this is an 8" with the stock gear ratio of 2.79 so I didn't expect that they put a locker in it but I have never driven one and from what I read it almost sounds like one. The noise happens when going slow and mostly when turning. And on the jack stands it definitely sounds like a ratchet and not something broke. What do you think?

Yes it does squeal. I knew that something was odd with how it acted when turning. Is there any way to know for sure without removing the center section? Thanks for all the help!

Yes. Put rear of car up on jack stands so that rear tires are off the ground and jack stands are under rear axle housing. With car NOT running, and tranny in neutral, get a friend to hold 1 tire with his hands and you try to turn the other wheel. if your side turns then you have a open Diff, no traction lock(posi) or spool. If you cannot turn it then you have a either posi or spool.Hope this helps.:)
