Maverick just dies

    Are you refering to a ground to the ignition module (below the windshield fluid tank) or the magnetic pickup inside the distributer?

    Also, how does the magnetic pickup module inside the distributer come off?? Looked last night....do I need to remove the distributer?

    I had thought the same thing as well. However, it has happened a couple of time just blocks from the house or within a few miles. Other times it's happened after 30 or 40 miles. Fuel pump was replaced 8k miles ago during rebuild....(problem existed at times prior to pump being replaced) But can't hurt to replace again...

    Sounds to me like you have a wiring issue. Like one of your ing. wires going to your dist. is shorting out somewhere or coming loose not making a good contact. Get in there a shake the heck out of your wiring and see if it dies. Look for cuts or worn spots in the covering. My wifes mav was having similar issue it turned out to be a loose wire in side the dizzy all I had to do was tighen it up and it never happened again.

    Yes the ground to the ignition module can get oxidized and cause resistance. Grounding it to the engine or straight to the battery is best. Body grounds tend to drop voltage (~.1 VDC or more) and also corrode quickly(in my experience)

    You have to disassemble the distributor to remove the pick-up coil. I don't remember the test spec and the earliest pick-up specs I have are for an 82 mustang duraspark 2 (per Alldata pro) ohm test with a 250 watt heat gun 1 - 2 inches away from pu coil for 5 - 10 minutes (basically saying at normal operating temp) ohms should be 400 - 1000. A colder coil will have less resistance. Pick up coils don't go bad real often but, on our old cars anything is possible.

    Thanks for the info. I just inspected the pigtail off the distributer pick up. The pickup module has three wires: Purple and Orange (stator Assembly) and Black (ground) the other side plugs into the wire harness on the car Black with blue dots, Black with green dots (ground), and Yellow. The insulation on the Yellow wire appeared to have been heated at some point in time. The wire is not exposed, but the insulation does look different from the other wires. I would send a picture but not sure it would come out.

    Over the weekend I shall run an extra ground as you described. Thanks again for the info.
