were there copper washers behind the nuts that held the thirdmember into the housing?
if the thirdmember is pulled out from the housing at all it will make it really difficult to pull the axles out and will have a hard then easy turn that you describe. if the housing is bent then it will also make it difficult to get the axles out. i highly recomend takeing the diff to shop that specializes in them. they should be able to streighten the housing and check all the bearings, and gear set for wear. most people who replace the pinion seal end up overtightening the pinion nut and damageing the pinion bearings. they will start makeing noise in just a few hundred miles. are you just rebuilding your motor or hoping it up some? if your hoping it up, then you might want to consider having a posi and different gear ratio put in.

im just putting a stock 302 in with a performance cam. i pulled the i6 out. still need to get a few parts for the swap. the rear end was all together and i had it on stands and was turning with trouble a lil i understand if i had it apart that it would have some problems. do you think it could just get the bearings that are doing that? i think taking it to a specialist is a great idea. thanks for all yalls help. my plan is to just repair the rear end till i get some money to drop a new pumpkin in that is locked or rebuild the one i have to lock it. money is tight on this project so doing what i can to get it back together. will slowly drop cash into it as its running. haha a running project car hopfully. thanks! :)

The bad thing is if the axles were still installed along with the brakes how do you know it was not a brake dragging causing the tight spot?
If you are on a tight budget and just want to get a rear end back in there I would look around for a used 3rd member. I am almost positive it woulde be cheaper than getting yours rebuilt

i got the 3rd member out and the bearing on the left side is shot. reguardless the turning by hand something was wrong with the rear. when i drove it, it made a bad noise and wouldnt get up and coast it would slow down fairly fast and sound like the rear was going to blow up basically. ill let yall know what the shop says about it. thanks for all the help.

sounds like you need bearings and a gear set. if the carrier bearings are bad enough to allow it to move then the gears are not meshing as they were made to. this results in noise and the gear set being worn into a bad patern. you can get what ever gear ratio you want at this point.
