I put a mustang 2 front end in my mav. Now its time to dial in the steering shafts. Ok...heres the prob.... when I removed the rag joint, the shaft inside the column seems to be loose in there.....so when i hook it up to the universal joints its all wobbly....its a 69 1/2 mav with a 3spd. on the column. Am I maybe missing some kind of bushing in the column to keep that shaft tight?
Otherwise.... aftermarket column maybe? From who though... looked around, and im not sure what would work in a mav.

Put a bearing on the bottom of the column.
It may not come from the factory with one because the coupler would have kept it in place. With a u-joint it will need a bearing or bushing to keep it centered.
The bushing OD should be a press fit into the column housing and the ID should be the major (OD disregarding any flats) diameter of the shaft. slide it up the shaft, put bearing mount on the OD and press (pound carefully) into the column.
You could use a ball bearing if you can find one that is a tight slip fit on the shaft and a press fit into the column.

Frank, so that bushing just goes into the end of the column then? just presses in? did you shorten the existing shaft any?

we pulled the column and removed all the shifter stuff. then cut the rag joint coupler end off the shaft and butt welded the DD shaft to the end of the steering shaft.slid the shaft support bearing into the column tube and welded it.
my steering shaft didn't have a...RAG JOINT...so i also installed this from Summit...
    hope this helps...:Handshake

Here are 3 pix of my (RCM) lower column kit: the bearing tacked in, the retainer sleeve, and the u-joint.

I called Rod N Custom motorsports today to order that kit....he asked where I bought my M2 front end....I told him (It wasnt from him) ...then he got all shi**y with me. He pretty much told me he didnt have that bearing...or any parts for a maverick. :bs: what the hell?
so anyways....ill just go to the local bearing shop and match one up to my column. And for a fraction of the price i'd imagine.

    3/4" DD.... I found a bearing with a 2" o.d. and a 3/4" i.d.
I welded the 3/4DD shaft into the 1 inch existing tube. pretty much like the pictures show.. I just need that bearing, then I should be OK
