So this is according to my mechanic, "The vacuum advance on the distributor doesn't work." What could be causing that, how does he know that aaaaand, how can I fix it?
The vacuum advance cannister is on the outside of the distributor, it can be replaced seperately. The mechanic probably had a timing light on car and with the hose hooked up and reving the motor did not see the timing mark advance with increased rpm.
Either a diaphram or the plate inside is seized up. Get that working and you'll see a huge improvement.
I see what you saying mavman. I'll check that out. Is the vaccum module easy to install if I get a new one?
If it's the same as the sixes, (which it theory it should be close) yes. I can't remember off hand if the dizzy has to come off or not to remove and replace that, but either way it's no chore. Might wanna blow some carb cleaner through it first before you buy anything. EDIT - Paul beat me too it. Shoulda figured that was coming huh?
Replacing the vacuum pod can be a chore if the screw threads are seized in the distributor body. Been there-done that. You can check the pod by removing the distributor cap and sucking on the vacuum hose while watching the breaker plate for movement.
hehe poor mans vacuum pump. always kiss your wife right afterwards! mine gets mad cause it leaves an oily or gassy taste ..... i changed mine and the hardest part was not dropping the little c clip under the advance plate. adjusting the vac movement was second.
