    Good job man!!!
    :bouncy:

That port is for your heater hose. Hook it up and it should run cooler. The other hose goes from the heater core to your manifold.

The top one goes where you have it...to the tstat housing.

You have a port into the waterjacked on the manifold. Maybe you plugged it with a vacuum switch or something. Mine has three ports.

I just bought a 3/8s threaded 3 inch pipe at home depot and hooked up to one behind the carb.

    hoses?

The small bypass hose it correct. One heater hose runs from the water pump where you have it plugged, to the heater core. The other heater hose goes from the port you have your temp gauge plugged into to the heater core.

If you see it heating up really quickly and can't find any reason you might have a head gasket backwards. The gaskets are the same for both sides, but you have to make sure the water port holes got to the back of the block on both sides. I found this out the hard way a long time ago. It was a lesson I'll never forget. Just a thought, I hope that's not the problem.

Also may not have all the air burped out of the cooling system. I didn't see a fan on it either.

Running it without the heater connected shouldn't make it run hot. Check the lower radiator hose and make sure it's not collapsing. That will keep you from having circulation if it is.

When i had the engine bored out he warned me about that and i made sure i looked for the 'front' label on the gasket :dancing:
All hoses are running fine, we double checked everything while it was running. and i have a 12'' 1200cfm fan hooked up to radiator, its just hugging right against it.
We are in high hopes that it is just the heater core hoses, im going to be heading out to fix this right after coffee, ill keep you guys posted. thank you for the info :Woot:

for me...water not circulating...is the only way the engine will heat up quick...:yup:

i always leave the t-stat out untill i get the engine ran in.
this makes it less possible for an air lock and/or a t-stat sticking closed.
the heater hose can be a short piece looped from the...intake port to the waterpump...the heater hose will play no part in the...hot/cold condition of the engine. it has a...heater control valve... that is closed w/heater off.
is the waterpump, the right rotation?

    ...Frank...good luck...:Handshake

what condition is your rad/heater core? i have seen new engines stop up an old rad/heater core from the max flow of a clean engine.
at the shop i hang out at, they replace the rad. and back flush the heater core of every new engine install.

    ...:yup:...

Do you have the correct water pump? Some of those spin backwards, I'm not sure how to tell you to check it, but someone else might be able to help you. All I know is that there are some 289/302/5.0 water pumps that rotate opposite. Good luck.
