Has anyone had any luck using octane boosters? Which brands really work if any?

I have 3 high compression engines in cars. Last 10 years or so been using Outlaw Octane Boost. Seems to do the job for me.

Useless! The stuff is a waste of money. I have tried every brand I could lay my hands on and it will not stop my Harley from pinging. I have used several bottles of several brands, in my Impala SS and it does nothing. When I get 92-93 gas, it pings all summer.

What I do is add about 10%-20% of the no lead racing fuel (100 octane), and it goes away.

retard your timing a tad, and that probably will help.

I run 2 bottles of Octane booster and 1 bottle of lead subtitute for each tank of 93 octane I put in.
If one of these mixtures is left out of a fillup there is a definite difference in detonation.
All engines are different and it's just a matter of finding the right combination for yours.

I used to run 2 quarts of Tolulene (paint thinner from hardware store) and a small dixie cup full of Automatic Trans Fluid (lubricant for the fuel pump) per 10 gallons of 92-93 octane gas in a 11:1 327 Chevy that I had. If you run this very often you have to start replacing fuel seals that are alcohol compatible made from nitrile rubber. Also a Viton tipped needle and seat will eventually get eaten up as well. Alcohol needles are plain steel. I used to have a couple of recipes written down using tolulene or acetone with their corresponding octane ratings. I haven't seen it in a while - I'll have to look for it . I seem to recall that a 5% tolulene mix raised octane by 3 points (dont qoute me on that until I can find my recipe)

One of the biggest problems with the pump gas we use now, regardless of octane rating, is the reformulation by region of the Country that was forced down our throats by the tree huggers. Reformulated gasoline simply doesn't work as well in higher performance cars especially regardless of what you may add to it. Hell, my and Joy's Cherokees have high compression 4.0 engines and they both spark knock no matter how well tuned I keep them or which fuel I put in the tanks. Even the 6 bangers in the Mavs knock sometime. It's all junk fuel to begin with, and as a wise man once said, "You can't polish a turd".

    Toulene?

    The third letter in TNT!
That's what the old formula cars used to run when they displaces around 2 liters and made 900 or so horse power. Had a bit of a reliability problem though. Seems they blew up a lot.
That's some pretty grumpy stuff to be running through your engine.
    My opinion of course.

Octane boosster talks about raising octane by a certrain number of 'points'. But a 'point is .1 octane. So if it advertises up to ten points, thats only one octane.

They do something, but not much.

My GTO has 10.75 to 1 compression stock and the manuel calls for 94 octaine, I bought a case of octaine booster from KMart once and after reading the small print it claimed to lower the octaine requirement of the engine, I quit useing it, I bought a cheap water injection kit but never put it on, I always wondered about stuff I bought from KMart ( not their brand, just something they sold) what it was, probadly water? Old prop driven aircraft used to use water injection for more power.

Two 1973 LDO Mavericks (one 4 Drag one 4 driving like Mad on the roads :) ) also have a 75 6cyl Stock! Ok, well sort of Stock :P
what also sucks it 76 stopped making racing gas. i would beable to get (and still can until they run out) 100 octane off the pump down the street from my house.

guess i'll have to travel 8 miles get C12 now at 39.95 per 5 gals in a can. oh well? unless i use that octane booster crap.... with i really don't want to.... problem with that stuff you can never read the spark plugs with all that additive!

    Found the recipe for homebrew

I found my recipe for mixed fuel. I was lucky in that I had copied down a reference for the Grand National website. Looks like the website is still going strong.

    Here is the address.

    http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/misc/octanebooster.html

Basically 10% tolulene will raise the octane by appx 20 points. Charlie remembered it correctly - one point is = .1

I use some "booster" made for my motor. The company does not sell to auto parts stores or your local corner food stop. You can get it in as small as 1 qt to 55 gal drums...They have diffrent "mixes" for you build. I use the "MAXRACE" blend which is 40% Nitromethane by volume. They have more and less mixes for your taste....Contact Price Chemical Co. 901 E Mansfield Hwy Kennedale, Texas 76012. (817)572-0253. I think they could set you up with almost anything you could want.
Besides, Most boosters have a base of MMT. This is like adding lead to your gas, once you get so much in, more does not help but makes new problems like fould plugs. This stuff even has an upper cylinder lubricant. They can answer any questions you may have.

    Octane Boosters

I use the premium fuel sold here in Washington, but my car was made for unleaded and it pings with or without the octane boosting products, I was told to have someone retard the spark, I have'nt tried that yet. From what it sounds like from the other postings is that unless we buy some expensive racing fuel were out of luck for our little rockets. Marty
