no the flexplate is too small not the bell housing... the torque converter does not line up with the flex plate
It sounds like you have a torque converter that fits the 164t flexplate and a 157t flexplate. The bolt pattern is just a bit larger on the 164t, 11" vs 10.5" IIRC. Any earlier 157t torque converter should work, as long as it's for the 157t flexplate. Not sure when they started with the 164t, I'd look for a 70 model or so. It should be the 157t one.
sounds like you are trying to use a 164T bell and converter 11 7/16 bolt circle with a 157 tooth flywheel they will have to be changed to the 157T bell and converter with the 10.5" bolt circle
I second what Joe said your 91 302 is a 50 oz imbalance engine unless someone has put a different crank in. Therfore you will need to change the bell housing to use your 157 tooth flexplate .If you just change covertors your starter will not engage the flexplate with the larger bell. Or get a 164 tooth 50 oz flex and be done. So first and foremost ;find out the imbalance of your engine. that year should be 50 oz second ;determind the size of your bellhousing. Aod will be large. third you will know what flex to use. smallbell= 157 large bell =164 You have already discovered you have to small of a flex for your convertor. I beleive you will need a 164 50 oz flex.
You need a 10 1/2 converter. Or drill holes for your bigger one. If you know you have the right bell BTW. Wrong bell and the starter is the only thing that wont line up. Check the spacer plate on the back of the engine and make sure the starter lines up with your bell.
went to oreillys and got a 1991 mustang 302 flexplate 164 tooth and a hgigh stall converter bolted it on and i think its ready to go... was talking to ray(maverick maniac) and we both agreed if it is not a real h.o. then it would not need the 157 tooth flex plate... and the 164 bolted right up with no problem... everything bolted up real nice... taking my dads truck to college tomorrow and ill try to start it tomorrow... thanks guys and ill do some burnouts for ya
"So first and foremost ,find out the imbalance of your engine. that year should be 50 oz." you can bolt up the ...wrong flexplate..."been there and done that"... ......
He is putting the newer motor in is 74 and using the stock trans witch has a 157 tooth bell housing and the roller motor has a diff bolt pattern and runs a 164 tooth so he bought a after market 157 tooth flex that would bolt to his roller motor but the 74 torch convert. would not bolt to that and he needs to drill it for the diff. pattern the 164 tooth flex won't let the starter ingage
its a 77 motor and trans and im taking the trans and hooking it up to the roller motor its a 164 bellhousing and i have a 164 starter and i have a 164 flexplate... ALL FROM THE STORE FOR THAT YEAR AND CAR AND REMEMBER ITS NOT A REAL H.O. so..... i should be fine
