If I were doing a vinyl top,it would be the halo type.I like the halo top colored to the strips on '73-up grabbers.
I agree with everybody about the rust issues with a vinyl top BUT I personally like the way they look and if it is only a "cruiser" and is garaged you won't have much to worry about.
Go Vinyl!!! I like them and mine will never see the rain if I can help it. Love the red with the black top.
I voted full cause it's one of the options we hardly see anymore. Gives it the classy look. Not fond of it going down the rear sides tho.
My Comet had vinyl from the factory. When I bought the car in 1999, the vinyl was already off & the top painted. The car was garage kept all it's life. So, no rust. I had the same delema. Should I go back to factory vinyl or paint it. I opted to paint it. I can always go vinyl later if I want to. I like the looks of painted. Go naked....
no vynil mine was vynil and i cant tell you the headache ive had getting the rust off. i was starting to get scared there wasnt going to be any metal left on my top once i got the rust out. paint all the way....
coop, did you do anything under the headliner to perma seal the chrome holder clips? im still debating on plugging the holes on my comet
that part had already been taken care of when i got the car, someone welded the holes and ground them down and puttied them up a little, but they never got to getting rid of the rust. the problem is when rust starts and that vinyl holds the moisture in, the metal can get pitted really bad to the point that you have to remove more metal than youd like. Surface rust isnt bad to deal with, but when pitting starts, its another ball game. its all about what your purpose with the car is, if its a cruiser and you like vinyl, go with it but on the other hand, i think a Maverick can definately be made to make you automatically think " Muscle Car " and if thats what your going after, then no vinyl!
I love the look of the Halo top. However, when I pulled mine off, the roof came with it! I voted Halo, but if I did it again, I would put the Halo trim, but only paint the area inside, rather than reinstall true vinyl. I think that would be the best of both worlds, so to speak.
