When you get the heads off, post the casting numbers and maybe someone can help. I looked in a couple of books but there are lots of casting numbers with different chamber sizes.

I picked up some serviceable E7TE heads for $50. I'm trying to save where I can and ported E7s were my choice for price/performance. Some guys don't want anything less than GT40s so they'll sell them cheap.

Leave the 74 heads on it. They're nothing to write home about, but any SBF head is better the the E6SE's.

With E6 heads on a short block with the stock pistons for them, you can go up to a B303 cam and have no worries. It's not until you replace the E6 heads with others that you really run close with clearances. The reason for this is the valves in the E6 heads are recessed about 1/8" farther into the head than all others. That's also the reason these engines had no valve reliefs, they didn't need em with the valves deeper.

i am using an 86 block with c9oe-b (i will have to check, it's not common) 302 heads. i checked the ptv clearance using the old gasket, light springs, and some modeling clay. I ended up having .10 inches of clearance. IIRC, at least .05 is needed.
