bluegrass, hit on what i was thinking. if not oil, it could be water ( the human kind). the filler neck is about "waste water" high.
don't give up. we will get it going. this is something we (i) need to know. that way i can learn from your situation. thanks for sharing it with us...frank...:( :(

    ????

So you guys think its bad gas(no, not that kind :D ) might be causing the problems too? like i said it will run if i have the throtle down full but it stubles...BAD. the carb caught fire when it backfired. i put a fully charged battery in there and all it dies it click and not turn still. this engine has been nothing but problems from day one. it used to overheat realy bad. it still gets hot but not too bad(well....if it was running anyways  ) what are your opinions on getting a new enging and starting over? im thinking about puting a 351w in it if i give up on the 289. well enough ranting. lol

After reading all of this I'm thinking you might want to pull the plugs again and check to see if you have a blown head gasket. If it was smoking white as said before it's water, and now it won't turn over, sounds like it's hydraulic locked. (a cylinder has water in it and can't compress it). Also new plugs are not gauranteed to be good if they've been "washed" with too much fuel. seen it a dozen times in cold weather where folks flood their car and then can't start at all even though plugs "look fine". change 'em out and they start right up.

ill show you a sign! lol. so if i had a blown head gasket and the cylinder can compress, then the starter would not have enough power to crank at all? so that why im gust getting the "click" when i try to start it huh? #%#@ 289 lol well if i dont get this thing going in the next couple of weeks i think im going to chuck the 289 and bet a 302 or try the fun fun 351. thanx for you help guys. cant wait till i can return the favors.-james
