Do the headers need to come off to get the transmission out?

6901 Hookers on a 5.0. Swapping transmissions. Already have dual exhaust removed, trans drained.

Will I need to remove one or both of the headers to get the trans off without removing the engine?

Did you leave the engine bolted down or loosen it at the mounts?

I only have to take my passenger header off to swap transmissions. I have Headmans on my mav.

I have 6901's. I take the passenger side out and loosen the driver side
It's much easier to get the starter out with the pipes out of the way. also gives you more wiggle room to move the trans around

Cool. May as well do it now rather than wait til everything is jammed in there and suspended in mid air.

i heated my 6901s and bent them to the outside about 1 1/2" each. this gave me the room i needed to remove the transmission without it hitting.
this was done at the time my exhaust was installed.:thumbs2:

    Frank, DAMNED good idea!

I have to remember that next time I have access to acetylene.

It always bothered me that those headers come out at a different angle and the pipes have to be bent around to straighten them up. I see no reason why they can't both shoot straight back and be a straight shot. AND be symetrical.

    Install engine with headers on?

I have Doug Thorley shorties, PS and column shift C4, all out of the car. Well, the PS control valve/drag link is in place but I could drop that.

Any chance I could install the engine, transmission and starter with headers all bolted up? If not, what would be in the way. It sounds too easy to be true but just thought I'd ask.

I wondered if my question was close enough to yours to put it in the thread. You're right. Should I have started another thread.:hide:

No, I think you are fine here.

With those headers bolted up, I don't think they hang low enough to interfere with all those other components.

What is getting in the way in my situation is those long tubes hanging down by the transmission.
