my car sit for about 10 years. probably with antifreeze and water still in it, well that caused rust and my engine is spitting it out by the day...first it stopped up 2 radiators then i decided to put a screen in the upper radiator hose so it would stop it before it got there. since it's my daily driver i'm stuck.... my engine is running strong and doesnt smoke or anything...compression is up at about 132 to 160 a cylinder. it's in great shape except for the rust stopping waterflow.....i've flushed it many times....the stuff you buy and a pressure washer...i pulled the freeze plugs and sprayed but it keeps coming i've never seen so much even after flushing.

i know it needs to be dipped and tanked but daily driver and i dont have much money....i need another 302 or something ...any suggestions...i have a friend that has a 302 outta a 91 f-150. it has like 22,000 miles on it unfortunately he dropped it and thinks he broke the ear peice off for the 3 bolt hole for the starter and i'm stuck...need help thanks.

    I think...

...that you need a new radiator.

You might try extending your exit hose from the water pump into a large tub-fresh water only-no anti-freeze- and run your car
with fresh water flowing from a spigot into the radiator. You would probably need to remove the t-stat to do this.
I would expect this to help if you do it long enough.
You probably don't need the tub as long as the water
dumping on the ground is just water.

Having your radiator tanked is probably a good idea.

    i've done exactly that...

it's a brand new radiator...thats why i ran the screen, to keep from stopping it up. i pulled the t-stat and ran the water hose through with the car running to flush...some stuff came out and i thought that would've taken care of it for awhile but within 30 minutes of driving it....it overheated. thanks for the coments i just need something that doesnt cost much or doesnt take much time.

The only thing I can think of, and this certainly might not be the case, but I have to ask since you seemed to have the bases covered with the radiator.

I assume you aren't getting coolant into your oil - as in the "blown head gggaaasskkk".... I can't say it.

Your range of compression is a little off what I was told was 'okay'. Okay, being 10% between all the cylinders. 160 being your highest would put your lowest at 145. Your 132 scares me a little bit. Is it on one cylinder, or two adjacent cylinders?

Also, you might do a 'leak-down' test in addition to your compression test.

Man, I know how frustrating running hot can be.

Pleases keep us updated and good luck,

    Rick

buy one of those prestone flushers. the one that you put in your heater hose..if you don't know what i am talking about, it is this T shaped coupling that has a port for your garden hose. take out the thermostat. the kit has this elbow thingie that sticks in your radiator when the cap is off. run the engine with the heater going full blast and the garden hose running..the excess water comes out of the top of the rad with that elbow thingie shooting it whichever way you want so it doesn't get all over the place. when the water comes out clear, you should be pretty clean! let us know how you made out!

    Good call, Scott.

Could be the heater core that has all the gunk in it.

first off nobody jump on me I have never done this but I know a shade tree mechanic that did this: He had disconnected both the hoses (radiator and heater core ) and made it where it was a closed loop now here is the OUCH he used muratic (sp?) acid and put in the loop he said he ran it for five min. and dumped it cleaned it a few times with clean water, he had said he had gotten alot of rust out of the engine and he had no problem. BUT Again I have not done this I am just letting you know what one guy did. He drove the cougar on the middle leg of the hot rod power tour and he claims it was fine. Take it for what it is worth. I can see a termendous amount of problems doing this but you asked for a CHEAP to do. Just remember when you want something done cheap it usally costs a bundle to repair later: :bananaman

I would think there wouldn't be much left of the intake gaskets ...

Probably not a good idea if you have an aluminum intake or water pump either ..

Not jumpin on yuh ... :D

Like I said I did not do it, and it sounds like he has a 250 6cyl and is going to put a 302 in, for all the effort I would just rip it and stick the small block in

Chandler, I forget. What year was that hood ornament an option?
Seems like, before you could order it, you had to show the
    dealership your massive Titanium nuts

    and bolts collection.

if the 302 is cheap get it. Don't tell your buddy that 302's only have 2 bolts holding the starter on, ane even then....it bolts to the bellhousing, not the block. Tell him that it's broke and it's only worth about $25 with it being broken.:D

LOL Mavman...i just found that out too ...i am supposed to go look at it today so i'll find out what it's like. i already have a 302 for some of you who dont know. i did try the prestone kit ...i bought the super flush, super sealer and others... heh but the rust is coming out still.....guess it's a good thing to see the rust come out that just means theres less in there.....but none the less it's frustrating. but thanks for the heads up.. talk to you later.
