my c4 is getting pretty tired and i have a fmx that i had rebuilt for a f100 a couple of years ago i was wondering would this work in my maverick . is the fmx stronger than the c4? would i have to do any mods to the tranny tunnel? My mav is a 1970. Should i just get the C4 rebuilt?

I did the swap once in a 71 Torino... C4 to FMX.
I agree that the C4 is the way to go, but if you do the FMX, here are some things I learned doing the swap in the Torino, and what they would translate to in a Maverick:
*The driveshaft will be a tiny bit too long.
*The Torino required moving the factory adjustable crossmember back to the middle setting, so the Maverick crossmember will fall a bit short of meeting the trans mount. Not nearly as big of a difference as swapping to a C6, but you will need to fab something up.
*The FMX is cast iron, as opposed to the aluminum C4, so it will add considerable weight.
*The starter bolted up if I remember correctly, but the torque converter and flexplate will not swap from the C4 to the FMX. I seem to recall the block plate working, but don't quote me on that, this was a long time ago.
*I seem to remember having to flip the linkage arm in the transmission over to match the shifter. ???

Unless you are lacking the dough to do the C4 build, I really wouldn't bother.

    Edit:
I just noticed you said it was a 70... That year is said to have a smaller tranny tunnel than the later cars. The FMX isn't huge, like a C6, but it is larger than a C4. Something to consider.

As for strength, the FMX is a tank. It was designed in the mid-1950s, so it is tried and true. There is almost nothing availble for it performance-wise, but it doesn't sound like you are wanting a shift kit and stall converter. ;)

The FMX's had 164 tooth flexplates if I'm not mistaken, so it's possible that a matching flex from a big bell C4 would work. If I have time tomorrow I'll compare the two to confirm this. I have flexplates for both in my collection. Didn't the Grabbers have a semi-auto option with an FMX at one time ?

1970 was the year Ford had a "semi-Auto". It was a manually shifted automatic based on the C4 and did not sell well so it was dropped.

Ok, I always thought it was the FMX that had that feature.
