OK folks. Here it is striaght from the pages of the World Book Encycopedia: "Maverick, Samuel Augustus (1803-1870),was a prominent Texas pioneer and statesman. He helped establish the Republic of Texas. His name has become part of the American language. In 1845, Maverick took a herd of 400 cattle in payment of a debt. He did not mark his cattle with a brand. They strayed, and neighboring ranchers called them ' mavericks'. This came to be the name given to all unmarked cattle."
Yes, Jean Doll is correct. A Maverick is an unbranded cow or calf. PS- I like the NO BULL license idea. I am thinking something else though. I'll let ya'll in on it when it happens. TAke care Preston
Sam- That was one of the three I was thinking as well (DARKHRS or DKHORSE)... mine also going to Black in color... This is becoming weird in a way that still doesn't seem clear. If you look at all of the Ford advertisments, you always see a horse in the picture when an animal is in the photo, never any cattle. Yet there is a Steers head on the logo. (Hmmmm) Now, after looking at Jean Dolls name on this topic, I noticed she has a Maverick "Stallion" listed as one of her cars... now ask yourself why a Maverick also has a Stallion as one of their models............. but then again, why did they make a Mustang "Cobra" ??? wHaT iS gOiNg On HeRe ???
Well, you made this old man think when you mentioned the "Stallion" Maverick. Must've been some progressive cross-breading taking place in the sebmdies.
With 205,000 miles of trail on the speedometer my little bull maverick is showing signs of becoming a steer been thinking about put him on steriods(crate motor):bananaman
I was thinkinga bout STR CLR (steer clear) for a license plate, but felt it was sort of a stretch and nobody would "get" the joke. Perhaps someone can do "MAD COW" -A
Thats what I would have thought to, Scrapper... Thats why I had to ask. I was thinking about the logo's on the Bronco, Pinto and Mustang (all have a horse on the logo) So, looking at this now in part with the other three horse cars and their logo's, maybe the Maverick was actually a Bull since there is one on the logo. I just thought the logo had the Steers head for the "Western Theme"
This is killing me I just thought about the name Taurus... lead me to think about the Steer... <TABLE width=680><TBODY><TR><TD align=left>From Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary </TD></TR></FONT></B><TR><TD><TABLE width="100%"><TBODY><TR><TD bgColor=#cccccc height=1></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><TR><TD> Steer : \Steer\, n. I have my own theory on why the Maverick Stallion has a horse head decal. Back in 1976, Ford's sales were starting to sag. The Mustang was now the Mustang II, not the most popular Mustang they ever had. In an effort to increase sales , Ford came up with the Stallion package for the Mustang, and since the Pinto and Mavericks were also suffering a slacking off in sales, they decided to include them in the Stallion package as well. A Pinto is usually refered to a horse, so calling it a Stallion would work just fine. Not so much with the Maverick however. My thinking is that it would have been more cost effective to keep the horse head on all the decals and just change the names on them than it would be to manufacter a completely different decal for the Maverick Stallion. Most people back then probably would have not known the difference between a Stallion being a horse and a Maverick not being a horse, and Fords only aim was to increase sales. I'm not saying this theory is correct, but it's the only one that makes sense to me. If Ford had another reason, I'd love to hear about it, because I have also wondered why they called the Maverick Stallion a stallion.
Well, think about this... " Cobra Mustang" I guess if we can have a Maverick Stallion (Bull Horse) Then a (Snake Horse ) is OK too huh?
I just figured a cow and a horse got together and made mad passionate monkey love.........then the maverick was born.............horse with horns
Well guys, at least we're not the only ones confused on this subject. Here are a couple items in my Maverick memorabilia collection. Check them out.
