What is Type F made of? Is it not a crude derivative? Or is it purely synthetic?

It is nasty crap, whatever it is. One drop hits the floor and you have an 18" puddle after it settles out...

My personal opinion is: Manual steering on these cars is nice...I like it...Good solid road feel. The effort involved to paralell park with it is negligable.(I am a skinny little guy mind you) I have no problem with it.If you are running 9 inch wide tires on the front of your car and have to paralell park it wherever you go with it Keep the PS stuff.I have only seen 2 fords with this system that didnt leak and one of them was bone dry since the fluid all leaked out.The other was all new parts and it started leaking 3 days after install and wouldnt stop no matter what we did. They work well when in good shape but...I dont like the too light steering feel and lack of effort that they have.

I must chime in since the power steering is taking a beating, IF and i say IF, The system is put back together rite and adjusted PROPERLY, There should be no leaks and you will have some road feel feed back. I completely rebuilt my system several years ago, not because it was leaking but because the control valve decided it could drive the car better than me. And at 130+ mph the driver needs to have all the control. I put on a NEW not rebuilt control valve, for the simple reason that the old one was worn out and upon tear down i found that they cant be properly rebuilt with the parts in the rebuild kit. Which i figure that is why most REBUILT valves leak and don't function properly. Now my car steers as good as anything i have or had. So my answer to the original question is yes if done RITE, power steering is better than Manuel. ( it makes the car worth more, It isnt as hard on the colum bearings or steering box) And yes i do have 2 cars with manuel steering.
As always this is just my opnion, and im sure others may vary.

When I say "synthetic" I mean is it made from crude or some other substance.

Where DOES the stuff come from (before it comes out of the transmission or power steering to lay on the garage floor)?

My car came with power steering. i took it off the first week i had it and converted it to manual. power on these cars is too easy and makes them drive crazy in curves. the only way id put power is to put a mustang 2 rack and pinion under. its a fairly easy swap. but im ver happy with manual
