I have found a 65 289 from a mustang for $200. It was running when pulled. I was wondering if this motor would have good heads and a decent compression ratio

My book states that it'll be 10:1, heads will be in the 53.5cc range for combustion chamber. 1.78 intake valve, 1.45 exhaust. If it runs good I'd jump on it myself. Verify if it's a 5 or 6 bolt bell housing though, they switched mid year in '65.

:naughty: Compression ratio depends on which 289 it was. The 2 bbl motor was 9.3 to 1. Only the 4 bbl motors had 10 to 1. Both used the same heads.

The redeeming quality in the 65 heads are the small combustion chambers.(54 cc) They can be improved with bigger valves and porting, but after you're done, you will have spent the same money (if not more) than you would have just in buying a set of aftermarket heads.
