Thanx for the responses,,,,,,,,, now, how about the flywheel balance question? The motor is 73 and the AOD is an 81, so I am assuming I will need to do something with the flywheel to get the balance right????? What have you all done?
    Thanx......Dave

ditto that, how much for the x member? Looks like I'll be doing this as well.

I have the doug thorley shorties too, no issues with fitment? I haven't installed mine yet.

if you're sure it's an 81, then you have the 50 oz setup. Use a stock aod flexplate, and buy a 50 oz harmonic balancer (or use the one you have) the 81 engines are 50 oz balance, so you'll need the aod 50 oz balance plate

the motor balance cant just be changed by changing the balancer and flex plate. if your motor is a 70s motor then you just need to get a flex plate for the aod that is a 28oz imblance.

    I thought he stated it was an 81 motor? that's why I mentioned that, 81+ = 50oz

    Aod

I put a mustang 302 with AOD in my 76 F-150 and used a 1990 TBird Carb with the correct TV setup. no sweat. I put in 3.50 gears and I have been running it for 21 years. I used it today to haul my Swap Meet tractor to the meet.

Ok, so it's been said here an AOD is tight in the Maverick's trans tunnel, but fits, it's also been said elsewhere a 69.5 trans tunnel is smaller than later models.

Anyone done an AOD swap into a 69.5 Maverick?

This is not from my personal experience, but from reading other treads and info on the AOD. Early 80's model AODs have design flaws making them less reliable and have lower HP handling capability. Many upgrades and improvement occurred between 81 and when the AOD was replaced by the AODE in (I think) '93.

My point is, if you are not hopping up that 302 you may be alright, but if you pep it up at all, your AOD will likely need a rebuild and when you get it done you'll want to get it brought up to '93 standards. Some would say a stock '81 AOD isn't going to last very long even behind stock HP.

I just wanted to point this out to you so you have all the facts for your particular situation.

keep in mind also that aod trannies are power hogs in stock form..

the aod fox mustangs were a FULL second slower in the 1/4 mile than the 5 speed mustangs were, and the ONLY difference was the aod
