Previous owner tried to convert over to a power assisted steering. The issue is that the cylinder hits the headers, even with the lowered bracket. I could just move the the bracket and then weld it in place, but that just does not sound right. It also looks like it would still be too close to the headers and I'm concerned about overheating the fluid in it. I'm contemplating on returning back to a manual steering setup for the time being. Can I just remove the cylinder and power steering pump & hoses, or will I need replace the original steering setup? I still have access to it. 5.o engine out of a 93 Mustang
The best way is to change it to a manual center link. You could buy one of those adapters from one of the Mustang houses that replaces the control valve, but if you still have the original manual stuff, it would be better.
I'm going back to the manual for a while, but will keep the power steering set-up in storage. I may want to revisit this later. I also may just convert over to a rack & pinion at a later date. The next issue is that the '93 5.0 has a serpentine belt and I will need to build a bracket for a dummy pully after I pull the power steering pump.
Remember that the gearbox is different between power and manual setups too. The power will work, it's just stiffer.
