Older Ford's do always seem to have girly sounding horns for some reason. Even our '95 Mustang GT has a lame weak sounding horn on it. I swear I felt my nads shrink the first time I hit the horn in that car. If I'm blowing my horn at someone, I'm doing it because I'm pissed off at something they did or have a damn good reason for it, and I want it to sound like I mean business. I've got dual horns off an early 80's Oldsmobile 98 on my Mav, they are ran off a relay and 10 gauge wire. Tried hooking them up to the factory wire, but it wasn't strong enough to make them blow. They are loud, and have that lower, pissed off sounding tone to them, just the way I like it.
I don't have a horn at all, it was removed sometime in the past along with the wire under the hood. It was clipped off along with the washer motor wires. One of these days, I am going to get a Dixie horn and put it on a push button under the dash out of sight. Probably mount the trumpets behind the splash aprons.
I always wanted a horn off a fire truck...that will scare someone enough to make them jump. Early Falcons were wired hot all the time and the button was the ground, they had a relay.
No extra relays on the 4 horns on my ranger. It sounds exactly like a 70's Buick "duece and a quarter" when you hit the horn.
Your Ranger likely has a relay already in it from the factory, on top of newer, more adequate wiring. My Maverick has been around the block a time or 10, the wiring is just flat out old and there is no factory relay. For that weak little original horn, it worked fine, but the wires are to old and small, in turn allowing too much voltage drop to blow the ones I have on there now.
