My Holley blue pump has took a dump. It had gotten to where when you first turned it on, it would fill the carb, then quit, then start back once you cranked the engine. As long as fuel was being used it ran fine. Now it is dead, won't run at all. I figure the motor has burned up. I have been pricing pumps on eBay and on Advance Auto and O'Reilly's web sites. I don't think I will buy another used pump. I am looking at a pump at Advance, http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/we...s-Univ-Airtex_3141128-P_N3339K_P|GRP2030P____. Anybody ever used this style of pump, and if so, how well did it work? Another one I'm looking at looks like a Carter pump, http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/we...s-Univ-Airtex_3140563-P_N3339K_P|GRP2030P____. I have one like that on the motor home but I think it is probably a Carter and it works great. Had a Carter like that years ago that I used on several cars that worked great, too. I had an AC pump that worked like that first one once too. It only worked when needed, not run all the time like the Holley. It was a solenoid style, a piston pumped the fuel, sort of like a mechanical does. A lot quieter, too. Which would you guys recommend, based on your personal experience? I would like another Holley, maybe a red one this time, but they are out of my budget right now.
Mr. Gasket 12S......35 gal/hr. PLENTY OF FLOW for 3 Holley 2 bbls @ WOT. Advance and Autozone stock em in the stores. No regulator needed either. Summit lists it for $37. It's shown at $46 at Advance. I've had a similar Purolator pump on my 89 Ranger feeding the various V8's it's had for 8 years now. Never let me down.
I didn't think they shut off. I understand they bypass or deadhead, not shut off. I also understand that if you have a carb you don't need any more pressure than 7psi. The blue is way more than needed and needs a regulator and the red is just right.
Gene, I think mine starting shutting off because the motor was about gone. It only started doing that recently, before it ran all the time like it was supposed to. I do have a Holley regulator on it, cutting the pressure down to 6psi. Baddad, I was wondering about those. I have one on the motorhome for the generator, it works great for the one cyl Kohler. Those work like the first one that I listed above. Might just go with one of those and do away with the regulator as it won't be needed anymore.....
i work in a mechanic and we have had alot of trouble with airtex products. especially fuel pumps. get a holley red line
ditto i put one a camaro while back lasted about 6 miles before it started over heating and i have had nothing but trouble with mister gasket in my experince anyway your local speed shop should carry a rebuld kit for your holley pump
DONT get the airtex. I have one. I had to replace it twice under warenty in one year. spend just a little more and get a good one!! remember lower presure pumps are for carbs higher are for fuel injec.......pops
I'm going to run one of these on my Jeep Stroker project. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CRT-P4070/ I cant tell you yet how it does, But from what i can tell it is a quiet pump and should be able to supply the volume i need. The first pump you have listed, We run on some of our older machines (front end loaders, Motor Graders, Etc.) I wouldn't recommend it for your car as these are very low volume pumps. I have no experience with the second one, Although it does look a whole lot like the Carter I'm planning on running.
I have holley red fuel pumps on the 390 in my pickup and the 12.5-1 355 in the mustang. They deliver plenty of gas
I replaced the fuel pump on the Cherokee I am fixing up with a brand new Airtex. It lasted about 30 minutes before quitting. It was also a pain in the butt since the 2nd pump was wired backwards than the 1st replacement so I had to pull it out again to swap teh wiring around clint
I just ordered a Mr Gasket 12s from summit. With my eBay bucks, was able to get it for $44.58, shipping and all. I'll try it a while and see how it does. If it doesn't supply enough fuel, I can always go back with another Holley or a Carter later on when the funds improve.
I had the big Carter pump that worked well and tried to replace it. They have been discontinued from Carter and are only available as old stock. None around here though.
The only time mine doesn't supply enough for the 3x2 setup is when the inline filter before the pump is full of crap. That just serves to let me know it's time for a filter change. I had to change it yesterday. I did a full power run up to 140 last weekend and never starved the carbs for fuel. :Handshake
The pump came in this week. Went to put it on this afternoon, and it has 5/16 nips and the fuel line is 3/8. Local parts store was closed this afternoon due to a funeral, going back tomorrow to see if I can get some 5/16 to 3/8 fittings and a piece of 3/8 steel line to replace most of the rubber from tank to pump and pump to feed line.
