I didnt even notice it had big bumpers..but I did notice it had no grabber hood. but damn that is a nice Mav
My guess is either cost reduction, or they got tired of replacing rusty ones under warranty! Those things rot like nobody's business... Well that, and 'long about the introduction of the Mustang II they stopped marketing the Maverick as their "small performance car" and focused more on the Mav being a budget family car. Just a guess though.
dont you love when a plan comes together...Dont know why either they discontinued the grabber hoods, I have the old reg hood on my 75 which i think is nice enough, Now to just figure out what to do with my Grabber hood i picked up last year..dont think ill use it.
Besides that Im not a big fan of the Grabber hood...the scoops are too small for my taste and you cant add a scoop to it without throwing off the look completely. The warranty theory is a good one...would they really rust that quickly right from the factory?
I bet they would in places where they heavily salt the roads. I bet those hoods can scoop up all that salt-laden water kicked up by the car in front of you on the highway and then pool it up in the front of the hood frame... Then again, maybe it was just changing styles, fashion and tastes of the time. Maybe a lot of people at the time just started to think fake scoops were lame and looked stupid. I don't know, I wasn't there, but that was roughly the time of the overall death of the muscle car. Maybe the prevailing attitude was that the muscle car style was juvenile, sort of like today how the riced-out look seems to finally be going away, or at least "maturing" as much as it can.
The wheels and cobra emblems look out of place on that car IMO. But it's a damn nice car overall. Grabber hoods are awesome. No way in hell I'd put a regular hood back on my car. Aerodynamics keep the scoops from really catching water or anything. I've seen plenty of flat hoods and Comet hoods rusted just as bad as Grabber hoods.
They didn't have warranty back then like they do now, it was something like 90 days, and that was it. Both hoods have the same design on the front edge, just a poor overall design. I would think Grabber hoods cost more to produce, and since the 70's were the gas wars years, cheaper was better.
thats a very nice car. yeah the hood trim holds water. if you got one settin up take it off or raise the hood often
Mine had hood trim on on it, and it sat in a yard for a little over 18 years and was hardly ever driven, only moved around the yard...under the lip of the hodd was actually the only place on the car that didnt have rust...lol If you click on the link in my sig theres some pics of my hood underneath, 0 rust. I got lucky
The thing about the hood trim is that it covers the drain holes.... i dont know what ford was thinking. l remember someone here modified theirs so that it would drain. l think they just drilled holes into the flat part of the trim.
