I think I may have found a winner in the "Find me a project car" sweepstakes. However, it's in California, and I'm in Michigan. Has anyone gone to the effort of shipping a car? Who can share details of that type of transaction? Or, should I just borrow or rent myself a flatbed car trailer and take 6ish days to go and get it myself (not that I have time to do that until like two weeks from now). Anyone know about shipping??? Thanks!
Yellow75 just did it. He bought from Rick Book and shipped from Houston to Oregon. I was the guy who got the car out of the garage and to the delivery truck. It was not fun. Lots of problems, and lots of yayhoos to deal with. It all seemed pretty shady, so you really need to do some research into who is doing the brokering, and who is doing the actual shipping.
If you have a dependable truck and can borrow or rent a flatbed car trailer and take 6 days to go and get it I'm guessing it would be a lot cheaper, shipping is expensive and they wait until they get a full load so it may take awhile anyway. If I remember right the guy who delivered mine hauled 2 trailers, double stacked, eight at a time. He called me when he got about 80 miles away and said John this car is gorgeous I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Scooper77515's right it takes a lot of phone calls but the people I dealt with were good I still have the company’s name at home if you want it.
Definitely go with a broker that has a good reputation. But they are only brokers. They don't actually haul the cars. They contract that out to the lowest bidder, and it is hit or miss on getting a decent driver.
I have used Allstate Transport for 4 different cars and have been pleased each time. Call Elliott and he can give you a quote. You can tell him Ray Parrish from Grand Bay Alabama told you to call. His number is 917-497-0682. He recently had my Stallion sent from Washington State to Alabama for $850, about 2000 miles. No way I could have made that trip for that. And as Scooper said, Elliott is just a broker. He arranges the transport. I had cars moved before dealing with him and had many many problems. One time taking 8 weeks to get a 4Runner delivered. Some of those guys just don't have it together. Again, Elliot has always done me good and I'll continue to use him.
DAS worked awesome for me, straight from California to Detroit, then we drove it back to Ontario. (Don't buy that Orange car if your just going to hack it up)
That may in fact be what I'm looking at. I guess I'm wondering what your definition of "hack it up" would be ? Is there a Grabber Militia that wants all these to stay purely stock, and concours restorations only? I would not be doing a rotisserie restoration, but it's not like I'm gonna tub it out with a cage & chute. I love that interior - it'll stay, just get refreshed. The exterior color may go more copperish, and some black or dark metallic gray stripes. Maybe a chin spoiler. Yup, I wanted to build a 427W stroker motor. But that might get revised to a 302 based motor, just for cost and ease considerations.
Not really a militia, or a mafia, or a group......more like a club. Ha, Ha. Uhhh......this would be MY definition of "hack it up".
I agree - I think the orange car is original enough to keep it just that - original. If you're looking for a builder, I've got a '75 that's been sub-framed with Fox parts that I'm thinking of selling (I'm not going to build it). I can't speak to shipping a vehicle, I've always just picked them up myself - but I haven't gone halfway across the country either. I'd trust anyone that these guys have recommended since they have shipped multiple cars.
You should be able to find a much more common car to modify. Orange with Orange is pretty rare, it was a 2 year only thing (Orange interior) and it was in Grabbers only for Mavericks, and Comet Gt's for Comets. I have see only seen one other car pretty much the same as that one, in maybe 20+ years?
Whoa! See, now I'd call that an example of the "before" condition I'm trying to avoid. Although, I'm guessing no one would blame me if I "hacked up" that one - or would that still be taboo?
Someday, maybe.. you'll have a car that nice, and appreciate it for what it is, and whats it's become. Cars like that are not a dime a dozen anymore. Sure, it's cool to build a wicked street machine, but why not use a lesser car? Some people just have automotive morals, I guess
I agree with dave on this one. Use craigslist you can find solid project cars for $1000 and up easily but a rare rust free clean grabber should stay that way.
