c-4 or c-5??

    how can i tell if i have a c-5 or a truck c-4 the tranny i have has the check tube running into the side of the pan and has the big bell housing but i dont know how to tell for sure if it has the lock-up convertor ,i do know it has the H servo if that helps any

    Does the c5 have a deeper pan? Can you feel the lock up converter?
    Might get the numbers off of it and one of the number gurus figure it out for you

    One of the band adjuster screws will be fine thread if its a 5.

    In the USA you won't find many C5s with a locking converter. They didn't work well and the ones that I have seen rebuilt don't even have the feature installed.
    The C5 has a deeper pan because the valve body has a timing valve body mounted "piggy-back" to the valve body. The performance upgrade is to use the 72 and later valve body and modify it for performance. The converter and bell are deeper than the C4. The cooler fittings are 1/4" pipe instead of the 1/8" pipe of the C4. The other differences are harder to spot or internal but the C5 makes an excellent start for a performance C4 in any situation that needs a three speed auto.

    the pan seems doesnt seem to big and deeper about a 1 1/2 inch deep no more than 2 inches ,the bellhousing is a little deeper than some c-4s ive seen but its got the bellhousing that bolts to the case not directly to the pump cause its a pan fill tranny
    so if its a c-5 how deep will the pan be mine i know isnt more than 2 inches

    The C4 pan is 1 3/4" deep at the front - from the top of the flange to the bottom of the front edge. The C5 pan is enough deeper that you cannot mix the two up.
    It would be a simple matter to pull the pan and look at the valve body - if it has the standard C4 filter on it (bolts around the outside edge) then it is a C4 - if it has the C5 filter on it (very different) it is a C5.

    On a C5 one of the band adjuster studs is fine thread. This is the quickest way to tell, you don't even have to take anything off.
