ok first thing hello and i am a proud new owner of a 72 ford maverick with the original 302 engine and C4 trans. well i just got it today and drove it home well almost . i did test drive the car drove a coupe of miles and it was perfect brakes alittle soft but that i knew needed some worked since it was stock. but on the way home it stalled out when i would go from a stop at a light and add gas to it and i would start it again and it would drive for about 1 mile and cut off like no fuel was getting to the carb but when i let it sit for a minute it will start up again and drive for about a mile. i talked to a buddy that is a huge ford motor guy and he says that the fuel filter on the sending unit and in the line maybe clogged. and the carb needs to be tuned since it is a new rebuilt carb. does this sound about right or there somthing else it could be? and could anyone direct me to pics and like drawings of the fuel system and carb? the car is a holley 4v that is off a 85 mustang

thanks any help will mean so much to me

    maverick help

sounds about right to me. i would check any sort of fuel filter u have first. sounds like it is sucking something up in the sending unit and then letting it go after a few. the doing it again. kind of like a tennis ball on the end of a shop vac hose, when you turn it of it goes away, but when you turn it back on, well you know. :cry:but your carb could be way out of whack. have your ford guy help you tune it.good luck old cars are bound to have bugs! trust me i have been there with my 71 mav.(y)

Sounds like a electrical issue. Coil getting hot will do the same thing.

Is there even a fuel filter on it ? With what you describe, there's a good chance there's not.

i don't know there should be a filter on the sending unit at the pick up the pervious owner did say that the tank just cleaned out and re coated could that add to the problem like something getting clogged on the end and then we i let it sit it moves away and then is sucked back onto the pick up ???

There should be a filter in the tank on the pickup, but that doesn't mean there is one. And you're right about moving objects blocking the pickup, that's a possibility. There should also be a filter in the line before the carb too. If there's not, then you may have something in the carb blocking the needle/seat (that's the valve inside the fuel bowl that regulates the fuel entering the carb) These usually stick open though. Some Holleys have a "rock" filter inside the inlet fitting that can get clogged if there's not an inline filter before the carb.

Try 71gold's suggestion before doing all that.

:D Might also be helpful to take reading, spelling and comprehension classes while you're at it too.

    fuel problims

I hate reading but i did ready your thread and some others. so i thought i would say when i got my 71 it would run but a few minutes and then die. so i took of my fuel lines off and they were fool of nasty build up and also some water. so if thats the case i found that a coat hanger and some brake cleaner worked wanders. and of curse a new fuel filter.
