I saw a 71 GT Comet today and I was disturbed by how someone could allow such a nice car to deteriorate into such a mess. It was originally a very attractive car with highback buckets and a stickshift 302, dark green on black with black stripes. That was before it was murdered by a teenagers lead foot and a pole then 20 years in a field with the windows shot out instead of being repaired. The battery was removed and left to dry rot and fall apart on the floorboard thus ruining it. Beyond saving makes me sad.
This was only the second GT Comet I have seen in person and the two were polar opposites. What makes people simply neglect a nice car and allow it to fall to nothing rather than sell it to someone who can fix it or use it to repair another car? Otherwise the car died in vain you know?

I know. But still...makes me sick to see a really cool thing like this reduced to almost nothing. I mean it has all the parts that it was purchased for plus a few goodies but with a minimum of effort on the previous owners behalf it could have been in so much better condition. The new owner is using it to repair a Maverick too! What a fate for a Comet!

I've seen a lot nicer cars left to rot. 20 years ago, Mavericks and Comets were gone up here, they were just junk.
I know of a 68 Shelby GT500 that was consumed by the earth.

I do have to agree with you, it made me sick to see it in the shape it is in.

It is going to make another car live so it's not a total loss. Strip it naked and sell the hulk for beer money. Parts are parts man.
The dashpad is a huge surprise, no damage yet the bottom edge of the dash itself has rust holes, weird but awesome. I saw tail lights, trim, possible heads and engine, transmission, manual set up, doors...overall a good deal for the price.
    Still, sweet green GT, ouch.

Trust me when I am done with it that will be all it can be used for, making beer cans or Honda's. But you are very right, it is funny how somethings rotted but other didn't. Like how the seat bottom rotted in half, but the seat covers still look good.
And yes I am very happy with the deal for the price.

The nice dashpad is weird. The windshield seems to have shattered like a picture glass instead of a windshield.

This one kills me. I have the exact copy of that car in my back yard minus the damage.

the dash pad will probly crack once you try to move it or even press on it to hard. ive seen that happen many times. alot of people dont see cars as anything more than a method of tranportation. they will just walk away from a wrecked car. i bet when that car got wrecked it was worthless. the owner probly couldnt get a dime for it. so instead of doing anything they just walk away from it because that takes the least effort.

Can you send the me VIn and door data tag info so that I can put an obituary in the Comet GT Registry?

    Thanks,

After my kids went to there moms today, I went out and took a few more pics of the Comet. As you can see the only thing keeping it together was the carpet......:D

That's just a little salt damage! If you're from the northeast, sadly, you expect that kind of damage.

If I waited for a car with intact floors, I'd still be waiting for one! Heck, I know Mustang owners who start with a key, a window and a welder- two years later, they're in the local shows!

    Damn I hate winter!
