Had to jump the Comet this morning which sucks. There is a popping on the passenger side I think is an exhaust leak but I'm going with headers soon so whatever. It is idling rough and pulsing. You can't hear the pulsing up close but inside the house it is clear(loud car) through the bass note it makes. I called in to work and I am replacing the points today. We had a good frost last night and I think the distributor cap was frosty. It started right up then died and off and on until the battery drained. I figure with the static in the radio, hard start, rough idle, missing and pulsing it might be a good idea to swap out the ancient points for fresh new ones. Amirite? It ran great all day yesterday for 150+ miles to meet a fellow member out of town, even to the point that you could reach in and start it without touching the footprint gas pedal(good for 10 extra HP). Gotta love old daily drivers! Don't tell me it's the timing, thanks.:16suspect
I dont have enough money to buy Pertronix. So it will be a points replacement. Advance sells "Ignition Points/Condenser/Kits" But the images only show either the condenser or the "telegraph" thing and I was trying to replace everything under the cap. Including the rotor button and cap itself. Why don't they sell THAT kit?
You should be able to get a pertronix setup for about twice the price of points, cap, rotor, condenser and an oil change. Not sure what they cost now, but I am pretty sure mine was only $60 or so (that was several years ago). And I have never had to adjust the dwell or replace points since. Starts right up no matter what the temp or how weak my battery is. If you can finagle (sp?) it, try to get pertronix. I know it is the wrong time of year to be buying for yourself, though...
