is it just me or is a mav with power steering overkill? i mean when mine was running it was no effort whatsoever to turn but when u got up to interstate speed... it was scary! i have..had no slack in any of my frt end and it is just scary to run 60 and change lanes! and my old one was the same way...maybe not as bad. my new one is an ldo so i was thinking it may be engineered to be less effort on the steering. i have an idea but not real sure as to how itll work or how im going to go about it. i was thinking of installing a steering dampner off of say a jeep or something i work at dodge so getting one is nothing i driving a jeep or a heavy duty truck with a blown dampner is a whole lot like driving a mav with power steering

there is a way to adjust the power stearing. it had something to do with the controle valve assembly. somebody posted how to do it a few months back. i cant rember who it was. try searching for it. it was in a similar thread to this. it should be a tech artical or a sticky. if you find it, do a tech right up on it.

I have a '77 with PS and it is pretty hair raising doing a lane change at 60-65mph...I have about 1/8 turn play so the car drifts from left to right...theres constant adjustment going on...and it happens a lot faster doing higher speeds.

Ill be converting mine to MS eventually, I have to find me someone who wants to swap parts or give one to me free :rofl2:

My power steering is overkill. It's not as bad as most though, apparently. I have wide tires and a later model pump, Fox Mustang I think. Both those help. My car feels completely stable at 70-80, uncomfortable but not too bad at 90, but recently I (stupidly, I admit) ran it up over 120 and it was VERY twitchy. I want to find a way to regulate it. I might look for a bigger pulley for the pump, or screw around with the control valve, I've even halfway thought about maybe putting a shock on it like you see on 4x4's...

Mine to was very "loose" especially at speeds. On night after making a top end pull with a Mustang (he claimed 150+ mph). I to decided that wrecking the Maverick due to the steering was not an option. That was when i rebuilt the entire front suspension. At this time i didn't replace the control valve or the slave cylinder and it was just as scary with the new front parts as with the old. Now i had rebuilt control valves in the past and was never completely satisfied with the results. I actually had the kit to rebuild this one, But after inspection i found the ball and socket worn to bad. So i ordered a NEW not rebuilt one with a NEW slave cylinder. Take my word for it, Its the best money you can spend. Now I actually have to put some effort into turning the wheel, Its not as hard as my 79 Manual steering pickup, But takes more effort than my 87 jeep to steer. At speeds it is just as tight as at an idle, I think this was the way Ford intended it to be. So my advice to anyone wanting power assist steering is to sell, through away, give away, Just get rid of the old control valve and buy a new one. Yes they are expensive, But how much is your car worth?

That's food for thought, Bryant. I have always thought it was just a matter of too much pressure when the pump is spinning high RPMs vs. the 1500-2500 it was probably designed for.

Jeff, I'm looking for a complete power steering setup for my 72 Grabber-brackets, pump, hydraulic cylinder, lines, center-link, etc. Are your parts for for sale?
