97 and 2001 Explorer Engines

    Im looking to do an EFI 5.0 swap sometime in the future and I might of found 2 candidates. They are both 5.0s out of Explorers, one is a 1997, the other 2001. I am planning on taking the whole engine out, rebuilding it, and maybe a new cam. I will keep the heads that are on it, assuming they are GT40 non P. Which one will have the GT40 heads?

    I tried to look for the "4 lines" but I couldn't see them. Are they on the back side of the head?

    Fresh out of Mavericks
    the 97 should be GT40s, but I think they went to P mid year.

    Look for 3 lines, not 4. 4 is P head.

    Im not sure but the 2001 explorer I saw was not Modular.

    Mod motor didn't start until the third generation Exploder, in 2002.

    So what is the difference between the GT40 P and non P heads?

    spark plug angle so you cant find a header that fits are cars:huh:

    I was trying to convince myself to pull the trigger on a set on ebay but just couldn't do it. Now I come here, see your post and I'm glad I didn't! I take it for our cars we are better of with the non P heads.

    The "P" heads also have a "P" cast into the front corner of the head, next to the valve cover. The non "P" heads have a GT cast here if I'm not mistaken.
