I plan to install a cage in my maverick. I am going to buy one of the kits from summit. When welding it in the car does anyone have any ideas on how to avoid burning the headliner
Use a welding blanket. Put it over the point of the cage that you need to weld and hold it up against the headliner by running a rope through the door openings and over the roof. I hit a lucky point in time as my cage is going in before the new headliner is installed. Maybe Harbor Freight has one cheap?
Welding Blanket works good, got a couple from H/F. Try an weld as much as you can before going in place. Top halo can pretty much be welded inside car with protection before raising to roof. Take your time an pre-plan your cage with as much "open welding"- no tight spots- as you can. Good Luck!
Not sure if you got your cage yet,,, www.swracecars.com has for Maverick http://swracecars.com/store/view-item-search.aspx?Search=11-3559 cost $269 for 10 pt & shipping est $115
also make sure to cover your window glass with cardbord cutouts or somthing weld slag can melt the glass and splatter can pit it.
I would just use an old cookie sheet to block the sparks when tacking it together, then cut holes in the floor to drop it down and finish welding it up.
