I was remembering when i first relized how cool the Mavrick was. It was 1982 and my Dad bought my sister a 1976 Mavrick Yellow with a black stripe, I was 15 and stuck with a 1974 Vega. I really wanted the Mavrick but my sister wrapped it around a tree two days later! DESTROYED it. i have wanted one ever since and after raising two kids and barley keeping my head above water im now in a good place and looking for that right one (not already fixed up i'll do that my self) whats your story?
Well, I was brought home from the hospital as a new born in my dad's '71 Comet. I then grew up around the car over the next 13 years. He sold the car in the summer of '01 and I more or less forgot completely forgot about these cars. In the fall of 2004, I was looking for my first car, and had decided I wanted an early-mid 80's Mustang because I had always loved my dad's old '84 GT. While looking through a photo album one night with mostly pics of the Mustang in it, I found some pics of the Comet and that's when it hit me that THAT was the car I really wanted. So I set out looking for a beater Comet for a project car. That's when I found out how much easier it is to find Mavericks. 5 years, 10 Mavericks, and almost 101,000 miles behind the wheel of a Maverick later, I've still never found a Comet, but I love the Mavericks and have no regrets. Similarly, I never found that early 80's Mustang either, but I did get an '80 Mercury Capri RS.
I saw a Grabber in Hermiston Oregon when I rode down with my dad for Power Ball tickets. The car had a 4V Cleveland in it with a nasty idle. The guy said it ran high 11's. It was a cool little hot rod and the hood reminded me of the one on my GTO. After that I always liked them but never really went out of my way to find one.
I was about 11 or 12 when I first noticed them. I wasn't a car freak back then, didn't know anything about them, didn't know they weren't "supposed to be" cool cars, but I loved the shape of them, the size, and even then I knew that "real" cars were RWD, and these things had V8's! I just knew they had to be awesome.
In 1978 my Pontiac was totaled, I got a ins. draft not a check for my loss.. I found a car lot that would take the draft, he had only two cars on the lot in my price range. A old ford van and a 71 Maverick Grabber, I picked the Grabber... 200 six and 3 on the tree... Took me about an hour or so to figure out how to drive the stick..lol.. I loved that car.....
My first car was a Maverick. 1974 Grabber (white with orange vinyl top, 302)...paid $1600 for it in 1985. Absolutely loved it. Made the stupid decision to sell it after drinking myself out college and opting for the Air Force in the spring of 1989.
Same here. I never paid any attention to them, and only got the one I have because I saw it sitting out in the pasture, and I was swilling a couple beers, and thought to myself "that has a V8 in it, but it is UGLY...but if I got rid of those huge bumpers..." Then I got on here and saw that they made small bumpers for it and I was hooked!
I first noticed Mavericks when I was 8, and my mom bought a new one in 1970. It was a base (NO options at all) 6-cyl auto, Metallic green with black interior. The first real interest I had in the Maverick as a car was when I learned to drive in hers.....and then, as my first car when she gave it to me when I got my license. But, it was a hand-me-down, and wan't what I "picked" for my car, so after driving it for about a year, I found a nice, original 1970 Mach-1 Mustang, and sold the Maverick to help buy the Mustang. THAT'S when I first "appreciated" the Maverick as a cool, fun car....because even though I was driving just about every high school boy's dream car, and even though I loved the Mach-1 and it was a great car, I still found myself missing the Maverick, even if it wasn't a hot rod or muscle car (although they can be), it was a fun, dependable, cool looking ride. .
I always thought the Maverick was a cheap knock off of the mustang, I HATED IT, Expecally the 4 doors, but when I saw the 72 Grabber i bought 2 years ago, Something just sparked and i just fell in love with it!!!! Ill never part with my Grabber! I get ALOT of attention in it!!!!!! Chaz.
I thought mine was real cool when I got it for free and actually drove it home after it sat for a few years. I originally was looking for a 65 Falcon to put my Cleveland in and couldn't find anything worth restoring. I settled for the free 70 Maverick and it grew on me. Now I want to be buried in it like the old guy in "Used Cars". LOL!!
I remember in 1970,I was 22 then, when the Maverick came out. Since Ford had done their best to start uglification on the Mustangs and Cougars, the Mavericks and Comets looked so cool. As the 70s went on and the uglys got uglier, the Mavs and Coms looked even better and better. The federal bumper era,73 up,made the cars look a little bulkier, but the body style stayed the same. I`ve always loved the looks of the Mavericks and Comets and always will.
I needed a car in about 1996. I didn't have enough money to repair the engine in my first car (1974 VW superbeetle), so a friend from work drove me about 3 hours to his dad's house. One of their neighbors had an old car for sale for $400. I had never seen nor heard of a Maverick, and when I saw it, well I didn't find it that appealing, but I needed a car. So my second car was a 1970 3 speed faded red Maverick. It wasn't in the best shape, but I drove it the 3 hours back home with no problems other than getting used to the lack of power steering. I still didn't appreciate it until a few months later when I gave another friend a ride to pick up his girlfriend. We were both out of high school by a year or two, and she was a senior. Well it seems they had done a few things her dad didn't approve of, and he was waiting for us when we got fairly close to their house. I had no idea they were having problems, until we saw the dad and my friend made it clear we should go. I turned around and took off, and her dad hopped in his truck and came after us. We lost him almost immediately, but I didn't stop until we got back to town (she lived out in the country in east Texas). After that I loved that Maverick. It handled those country back roads at 60 plus mph really well.
