A lot of the truck parts stores sell the "O" ring material by the inch. It comes on a roll, you cut it to fit and fasten the ends with super glue. Don't laugh, when put together, you won't pull it apart! It works well with a "O" ring that fits in a groove like the one on the cover. It comes in different sizes and traditional round or square sections. I have used it on fuel water seperators and on air dryers, and never had one leak, even with 150 psi air pressure on it.

It isn't an "O"-ring. It is a lathe cut (square) ring that is circular in shape. An "O"-ring won't work.
That is the "REAR SERVO COVER" and when you take it off you will find some oil and the servo piston/seal assembly. The seal will likely be stuck top the cover - they usually are. I coat the ring with a thin film (.010") of Loc-tite or Permatex 518 to make sure it seals.
If the piston pops out you just push it back in when you install the cover. (after cleaning up all the oil that comes with it.

Paul, I'm not trying to be a smarta$$, but you didn't read my post all the way through. The square cut material is available on a roll, I know I have bought and used it myself. My parts man called it "square O ring material". It may not be the correct name, and may not be exacatly the same material but as long as it's the same size it should work.

The cut to fit method has failed to be satisfactory for me a few times so It isn't as much as not reading your post as it was "use the right part for the job". Its just my anal retentive side coming out - sorry.

The piston is spring loaded and if you find a way to keep it from popping out let me know what it is. After 35+ years of working on these transmissions I haven't found a reliable wat to keep from splashing oil - I do use a wad of shop towels to catch it but it still gets messy.

I don't care that much about the fluid, the bottom of the car is already covered :)

Is there a strut or anything that connects it to the band that will fall out if I take the piston out?

    Thanks!!!

You shoud tighten the adjuster to 10 foot pounds before you remove the servo piston. That will tend to keep everything in place while the piston is out.
