has anyone done it. I am planning on running a trunk mounted battery in the maverick and have a bunch of welding leads. I figure it should work good
As long as the cable is 0 or 00 size it will be fine 1 AWG is on the verge of being too small for the run from the trunk so it causes a voltage drop while cranking.
My company makes automotive battery cables, 90% of our customers specify welding cable because it's very flexible. As Paul mentioned, use at least 00 from the trunk.
i ran them years ago on my 66 impala. i picked up some awsome cable off the bay too. high strand cable is pretty easy to get now days.
i rember reading that welding cable is not good to ues for bat cables. now i personaly have used it and had no problems. and i cant rember the reason that was given but i do rember it seemed sound at the time. the way i figure it is coper is coper and how can it it being softer or stiffer mater in this situation. im just puting this out there just incase somebody does have a problem with the cable or even knows what the problem with using it is.
i used to use it to power many amps in some old car audio cars i had. drew far more power than a starter. i used welding cable on all of them and it worked perfect every time. go ahead. it will work great!
So are you guys running the cables to the factory solenoid location and to the front of the engine block? Would the torque box on the pass side be a good relocation spot?
I ran mine to the factory solenoid location. But even though I had big enough cables, I had so many problems with the battery being relocated, that I moved it back up front. The problem I had was with hot starts.
Baddad, What size cable were you using? If the cable is too small you can easily get hot start problems. (hot copper has more resistance than when it is cool and 1AWG is very prone to that when running the distance from the trunk to the front of the car. Anything smaller would definitely be a problem.
