Hey all, got a weird problem here.. The Mav ran outta gas a couple days ago, after putting a couple gallons in, she wouldnt fire up and began spitting gas out the top of the carb.. Also, the hose that runs to the PCV valve from the front bottom of the carb (its a single barrel Carter YF) shoots off when I crank it... Any ideas?
probly sucked some crud from the bottom of the tank when you ran it out of gas. you will probly have to take the carb apart and clean it out. put a new fuel filter in and see if that works.
Tap the top of the float bowl with the handle of a screwdriver.Sounds like the float dropped stuck open the needle when the bowl went dry.
that happened to me too when i switched out gas tanks,i didnt clean the one i was putting on and had a bunch of rust so it clogged up my fuel pump and was done for, so i had to get another fuel pump for my mav and i got a air gun and shot air thru the fuel line just in case if there was rust caught in there too,and yep lots of rust had came out from it,id suggest to clean out the lines just in case but the fuel filter should grab most of it but i hate wasting filters so i did it
Whats real weird is that the filter looks clean... I will clean out the line though, who knows what kinda junk has accumulated in that tank over 40 years! Thanks for all the input guys!
the float sugestion is really good also. the float would never normaly drop all the way so when you run it out of gas it would drop and could have goten stuck.
So I threw on a new fuel pump and filter.. I also rebuilt the carb... However same thing is still happening... I'll be cranking it and gas will spurt out of the top of the carb.. I took the carb to the place we got the Comet's 2 barrel rebuilt waaaaaay back and He took a look at it and couldn't figure it out either LOL So I'm stuck here... Line is clear as fuel is filling up the filter case(clear glass one) and all the lines are hooked up(vac. advance, PCV, trans)
fuel squirting out the top of the carb can only be one of 3 things that i know of. 1. fuel pressure. to high of fuel pressure will push past the needle and seat and over fill the float blow causing fuel to come out the vent. 2. needle and seat. if the needle and seat are bad or have something stuck in them they wont be able to seal and will allow fuel to flow past and overflow the float bowl. 3. float. if the float doesnt float then it wont close the needle and seat. it can also be missadjusted. thats it. unless im missunerstanding you problem.
as bryant said, thats about all that can cause that problem I know of ?, 1) take carb apart and check the needle and seat for some thing that would not make them seal together . 2) take float out and see if it will "float" in a small bowl of water and if its a metal one you can shake it to hear if any fuel has got into it, but no mater what style it is, it should "float" not sink when tested. 3) make sure the float is adjusted correctly to the right shut off level (of needle and seat) for the carb.(and that they are hooked up together right) and last 4) check fuel pressure going into carb, 4 to 6 psi should be ok, but above around 7 psi the fuel pressure will be enough to push past the needle and seat. also you may make sure that the float bowl vent is not blocked off as the carb needs atmosphere pressure to work correctly.... hope you find the cause ... but sounds like they said :a sticking float/needle and seat to me.
Ok cool guys, thanks! I'm gonna check the needle and seat again... I had the carb shop guy set 'em for me so I'm gonna go back and talk to him about it.. Hopefully I didn't get screwed lol I'm pretty sure I'm gettin spark, I hear the "tick tick" noise from the coil wire when its disconnected lol Ain't about to hold it though
