I am in a confused state of mind, no jokes please I know my brains are oatmeal already!:bananaman My 70 as it turns out is actually a 69.5 from talking to mom and from info received from here and other sites. I had planned to yank the 17 0 and istall a302, but now I'm not sure what I should do. the car has 77,000 miles and runs like a top. Mom said she bought it in may of 69 and it was made in St. Thomas. Should I leave it alone or go on with my plans. looking forward to hear what you all have to say.

moms70; make the car like you want it. I have a '69.5 also, and I have a 302, c4, and have fixed the inside up a bit. It is your car, so enjoy it.

I agree. It's your car, and you can make it however you want, (barring the incessant money barriers :D ). So do whatever you want to, but it's advisable to think long and hard about what you want to do, and then draw up a plan of how to go about it. Obviously plans can be changed, but it's a good start. Just my .02

    I had a 1970 with a 170 cid.

Good motor. 4 main bearings but thick from what I saw. I would keep the 170 and add a 5-speed and 3.55 gears out back. Port the head and put on some headers,a 220 deg. cam and a two-barrel. I gaurantee you will not fall behind in traffic like you do now. Go to 225's all around. You don't need the rubber since you won't be getting much power out of it. 110 horseppower is the base. I think with those mods you can put it up to 150 with about 200+ ft-lbs of torque. That kind of torque will eat most 4- cylinders up. Since the engine is so light acceleration would be pretty good. I have a beretta that is 150hp and 180 ft.lbs. It does mid to low 16's. Not too bad. A maverick is at least 200 lbs lighter. Fiberglass hood and aluminum wheels are easy way to get the weight down. Race seats and no back seat either help. Delete the heater if you want. Depending where you live. This about the same pricing as dropping in a 302. You will need to buy an engine that is worth the money. I saw one in the PAW mag for 1400.00 plus 100.00 or so shipping. Plus you will need different springs up front. You will need some fatter tires. If the rear-end is a 7 3/4??? you may need to upgrade Stiffer springs out back for wheel hop or cal-trac bars/slapper bars.A t-5 will cost about 400-500 in a yard in California. The rear-end gears are 200.00. The cam is 150.00, The head you can port yourself. I think a shop would charge less than 300.00 for a port on the exhaust side. The carb can be had for less than 200.00. I have seen somewhere people have crossmembers and all the necessary parts for the transmission swap maybe 200.00 more?. A stock clutch will do. And a different driveline is needed.

I estimate about 1600.00 dollars. If you by used stuff or look on e-bay you may get by with 1300.00 for all that. That's my two-cents.

The 170 isn`t making no 110 hp thats at the flywheel and nothing hooked up (no ac no ps no alt ) you`r realy pushing about 65 hp or so @ the rear wheels .

You could bolt up a 200 (7 mains) with no mods at all it will line up and drop in just like the 170 that will be putting out about 77 - 80 hp @ the rear wheels and will handle more power if you wanted to fix it up.

Thanks for the ideas, I think I'm going to stick with my plan of the 302. One of the guys I work with suggested o-ringing the head and installing a turbo like he's done on pulling tractors. At least I've been working while I'm thinking repaired the hole in my gas tank with some solder. looks good, but have yet to try it.
