I have a '71 Grabber with a '94 5.0L and a C4 transmission. I noticed a leak coming what looks like from behind the torque converter, so I replaced the front trans seal. I reinstalled the trans, started it up and still have the leak. Any suggestions????

Could also mean that you have some wear on the torque convertor not allowing it to seal to the new front seal. - Matt

If it's trans fluid, sounds like the snout on the converter is worn.Engine oil, rear main seal. Also check for cracks on the converter.

It is definitely tranny fluid. I did look at the snout of the converter and there weren’t any groves or wearing. I'll re-check the converter for a crack, but I didn't see anything the first time I looked.

Did you oil up snout and seal before you installed?

I did not oil the snout and seal. The seal did not look torn though. Do you think the seal is still usable, or should I just replace it again, this time oiling the snout and seal before I install?

Yes it should be oiled, no seal should be dry. Paul will tell you how to properly oil it up an make sure installed with any tricks.

If you ran the front seal dry you may have a groove in the converter snout now or at least a bit of burned seal on it. Clean the converter snout with 600 grit emery paper and replace the seal. Put Vaseline or trnsmission assembly lube on both sides of the seal lip and on the converter snout before you slip them together. That way the seal will not burn up before it gets oil from the transmission. It only takes a few seconds running dry to burn a seal.

Thanks Paul,,, I wanted you to verify the Vaseline on seal on both sides as I wasn't quite sure if that was acceptable.
