I'm looking to switch out the points ignition but am curious what all I'd need to do so. So far the plan is to get the MSD distributor, wires and coils to change out from stock, but do I need any other bits? Is there a full kit to switch the car to electronic ignition, and what other parts would I need?

A complete distributor is obviously an awesome way to go, but if you are just looking to upgrade from points, why not look into a Pertronix system? Check them out here: http://www.pertronix.com/prod/ig/ignitor/default.aspx It replaces your points with a modern system.

From the money you save there, you can get all the other goodies; wires, plugs, cap, rotor and coil. :)

You need to do away with the resistor (pink) wire in the main harness that feeds the box. They need a full 12 volts.

Okay so I'm pretty much sold on the Petronix conversion, at least temporarily, but what part number do I need? There's a big list on the page I was directed to above, which voltage combo do I need to choose?

I have never run the Petronics but have had 2 friends have trouble with them because of using the wrong coil or input voltage. This was several years ago so that might have changed.
They are a cheap way to go. There are several other ways to go also so read up on them before taking the plunge.
There is the stock Ford Dura-Spark set-up using either the stock box or using an HEI 4 Pin module. They might be the cheapest way to go.
Crane used to make a points eliminator kit but not sure if they still do.
Mallory makes one also I think.
MSD also makes a ready to run distributor that does not need an ignition box only a coil.
For a stock or mostly stock engine I really don't see the need for any aftermarket parts for a distributor. A Dura Spark Distributor and box or 4 pin module will give you all the spark you need and a lot cheaper than MSD stuff.
If Petronics have gotten the coil problem or input voltage, whatever it was fixed then that is a good option

[IMG] as you see, pertronics conversion kits don't come with...coil or input voltage. sounds like your friends wired the kit up wrong...the instructions come with the kit. it takes about 10 mins. to install. i have ran this kit in...6 cyls., V8s, VW bugs (2), VW Karmann Ghia and
Harley Davidsons(3). pretty much anything with points dist.

Well so far it's for my 70 200ci I6. I might also be getting either a 71 or a 74 V8 Comet in the next few days too and would want to also change out the distributor or points in that car.

The six will use a different part number for the unit than the V8. So, you'll need two sets.

What about other distributor sets? I'm probably going to need a new entire unit (either the spider gear or the distributor itself seems to be bad on the V8) and have been looking into Duraspark and different HEI distributors. The V8 isn't going to be a racecar but I want it torquey enough to beat most cars off the block. Any suggestions on mild combos of wires, distributor and coils?

first...what makes you think the dist. is bad on the V8?

second...the pertronics module in a stock points dist. to me is best on a stock to mildly built 6 cyl/V8. matched with the ...Blaster II coil...:yup:

third...torquey comes from...more motor, more rear gear (3:55) more stall in converter, locking rear end, ETC. ETC.

    ...:chirp:...
